whats up guys have a question , just purchased a 1975 tahiti 455. I crank the motor over the only sound is some what of a loud clicking noise, the belt that is hooked to the alternator and the pulley to the mainshaft pulley does not move at all nor is there any cranking for the starter , does any body have any insight on this problem.

id suggest just using a breaker bar over the torque wrench. if you want to keep any type of accuracy keep that thing in your toolbox.
take out the spark plugs, and turn it over by hand. if the motor turns freely then put the plugs back in. before you go starting your boat, if you CAN, remove the driveline from the PTO on the motor so that just the motor turns and not the pump. make sure the battery is fully charged at 12v or more, then make sure all your battery cables are clean and tight. also check your negative from the battery to the block. if it still doesnt crank, take a wire and try jumping from the battery +12v to the starter solenoid, perhaps it could be a bad ignition switch.

Sounds like a dead battery or corroded/loose battery cable connection to me......

okay i did the steps that u had told me to try
1. disconnected all spark plugs and wire
2. cranked engine over by the hermanic balancer once around smooth
then tried to crank over and same clicking sound
then went try the grounds all grounds okay and connected
took wire from battery to starter and just made the mechanical clicking sound
all gauges are on
do this tell me maybe my battery is not cranking enough output

have you jumped the starter to see if its working?

yes i have took a piece of wire ran it from the battery to the starter and made sure it was working, the starter is making the clicking sound

sounds like you got a frozen motor :-\ you can try smacking the stater while trying to crank it to see if the starter is stuck but sounds like the motor is toast

motor turns over by hand... assuming your battery is fully charged, and your cables are tight... id look into getting a new starter or starter solenoid.

Are you sure the solenoid is workin?
When you hit the key to start position, hold it there have someone tap the solenoid with a small hammer repeatedly at that moment...
Depends what kind of clicking you're hearing. If you're "actually cranking the ENGINE over, zee belt moves."

Sounds like electrical to me. Id pull the starter/ battery
and take it to your local auto store to test. If they test good id spend the 20$ on some cables and replace those. Then jump the starter and see if it cranks. That is if the engine is spinning and not seized. The alternator belt does spin when you crank the motor by hand right?

If its clicking the solenoid is working if its not spinning the engine is locked/ battery weak/ or the cables are old and no good or just have bad connections.
Oh and I prefer the tall cans. The mountains better be blue lol.

Solenoid will give a loud click when it isn't working.

I'll play along ;D
The click could be the solenoid trying to engage the bendix (its job) and the starter motor not spinning (its job).
My guess would be a frozen starter due to rust.
Either way, replace the starter and solenoid, inspect/replace battery cables, and double check your wiring harness connections while you're at it.

I ain't shittin, I'd love an excuse to buy an 18 pack and kill it with y'all.
When I bought my first float, the starter had been submerged and sitting for a long time. Cramps beat the hell out of my solenoid while I held the key turned, starter free'd and spun motor. I then knew to go buy a new starter and solenoid.
My stand up let me float a mile from parker dam. Loud click, solenoid (gets worse when hot)
96 Ford had the solenoid in the inner fender. Loud click/thunk, no startey. Solenoid figgss it.
Golf cart... Just bought a $36 solenoid cause I'd hit the pedal and clicks but no roll.
