Setting valve lash
« on: March 23, 2015, 01:38:00 PM »
So what does everyone set their valve lash to ?
I set them cold at .023 which is kinda in the middle of everything I've seen online
I know lash is somewhat cam specific but just trying to find a middle ground that is a safe number
It is a .620 lift if that helps any

I always set them hot. Mine are at I22 E24  but my cam is a lot bigger. 780 lift.

I would really try to find out what cam in in it.

I'm great on setting the lash, I'm just looking for my initial baseline
I'm going to go back and relash after I run it and gt it hot
So I'm prob right at good point then
When I got it some valves were almost 0 lash and some were as high as .048

I would start with.026 and see if it likes it. My old pump gas motor was about 630 lift and I set it to I.026 E.028

Locked out. I have a retarder that pulls 10 degrees when it starts and it come right up to 38 degrees in 30 seconds. Most of the guys are lock out between 34 and 38

Same here but I pull 15 at the start and locked out at 36. Pull 10 degrees for the 28 20 nitrous tune up. 👍👍👍

Ok so tomorrow.
Shooting for 800 rpm idle
Initial timing of about 16-18 at idle
36 maximum
Any tips on tuning and tweaking. ? Won't the load of the pump when in water change things a little bit ?

Yes it will a little bit. After the timing most adjustments will be carb related.

I read all the replies and everyone makes good sence, but remember everyone's combo is slighty different. As far as lash on most (not all) solid lifter cams is anyware from .022-.028 hot, really can't go wrong with .025 that will work fine, as I have seen many times peoples "feel" with the feeler gauge is different, many set the lash too loose, you should feel a decent ammount of restistance sliding it between the valve tip and rocker arm tip. Adjust the intake when you see the exh. begin to open and adjust the exh. when the intake is halfway closed, this way the valve you are adjusting is on the base circle of the cam. For my ign. set up I still run a mechanical curve but it comes in quick. I set base timing at 16* and there is 20* spread built in so my total is at 36* and that is all in @1,800rpm. But as we all know timing requirements differ for all engines due to compression ratio's, cyl head design, fuel quality, boost ratios or nitrous, just be safe. Good luck, take your time and it will work out fine.
