Title: 455 olds help
Post by: badlands68 on December 13, 2018, 07:43:35 PM
Hey guys need some opinions here. Have a rebuilt olds with only one season on her. The last time out going up River in Parker I started losing Rpms dramatically. At first it wouldn't go above 3000rpms, but after nursing her back down River, by the time I got to the marina it would barely get above 1000.

When I tried to give it more throttle it would sound like it was misfiring.  There was no rod knock, out any mechanical noises.

I'm running an hei distributor, edelbrock Victor high rise in- take. Holly 750 carb. Any suggestions or comments well help. I'm thinking it might be the distributor, maybe got wet and started dying?.
Thanks for your help.

A few things to check.

Fuel pump, tank venting, fuel hose condition, filters (as said), garbage in the carburetors, water in the fuel, distributor cap and button, ignition timing (could have walked) and look for metal contaminated oil (camshaft flatsville)....

Good luck. Sweet looking boat.

I'm running a holly electric fuel pump. When I first ran the rebuilt engine I checked it, and I was pushing 7 psi. I haven't checked it after. I'll be checking everything tonight, and I'll post my findings.

I was trying to make it through the season before I tore it apart. If everything looks good when I year into it, I'm throwing the pertronix on it. You think it's the distributor Lee?

Update: 1974 wiring and back yard mechanics were the cause. One of the thousands of splices to the fuel pump had corroded and shorted out. Causing fuel starvation. I thank everyone for the help. Ole girl will be getting completely rewired now.

So it ran with no fuel at all? That's crazy.

Glad it was something simple.

It’s wasn’t a fuel issue . Defiantly ignition or electrical . It keep popping the the “breaker” and he would have to reset it .
