Hi Guy's I'm looking to replace my plugs and wires on my 455 OLDS. What would be some decent plugs and wires to go with and what would be the correct gap? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am assuming I need marine plugs and wires as my engine is enclosed or semi enclosed. What I mean by that is I have a box around my engine with a large scoop deal on the top of the engine cover/box.
I also just replaced all the battery cables with automotive and have now found out that I should have went with marine grade cables...what to do now...leave em or go with the marine grade cables?
I'm flushing the oil and picked up some cheap autozone 20/50 for the flush and was wondering what a good weight would be to run? 20/50 is what I have been seeing a lot of, just wanted to get some feedback on that. The motor is pretty much stock from what I know about it.

I run msd wires and ac delco plugs. for your olds your going to have to find the right heat range by running the boat on the water not the trailer. pull the plugs out and see if there to hot or to cold. you want a chocolate brown color not white to hot and not black to cold.if running stock ignition 35 on the spark plug gap. theres alot more to this then just the heat range of spark plugs!!time to learn......

Can't seem to find marine grade plug wires for the 455 olds :o I hear all this chatter when you have any type of enclosed engine go with only marine grade wires, dist, alt, etc... My buddy says just run automotive, he has automotive wires and coil that he's been running for over 3 years now with no problems. He has a sun deck cover on his majic boat that fully encloses the engine area. I have areas all over my center box cover that would allow fuel vapors to escape no problem as well as a blower motor, but... I have 5 children who will be riding along and do not want to take any chances of a fire or explosion. I'm not sure what was on there before I found the coil wire which looks to be like some sort of universal plug wire. It says (High Temp Silicone) and is grey in color with black boot ends.
Stumped and not sure where to go from here :-\

ok marine grade stuff is expensive but with kids( i have 3) its worth it!!! the wires just get the best you can. Taylor or msd well there are a few that will do very well. you do what you can , after that do you what you can find.

It's got a Mallory points distributor and I'm looking to convert the points over with one of those conversion kits they sell, but once again at a stand still here as I need to find out about this distributor and the only number I could pull off of it is L501GV but when I google it i'm not coming up with any results :banghead:
So your running automotive wires? Do you think I would be ok with automotive as well? My engine is not fully exposed I guess I have what is called a dog house type of enclosure??? I have seats on each side of the engine cover (mini day cruiser)

Some have had good luck with petronics conversion, I haven't (odd fire buick), I use gm hei with lockout plate, and weight kit. USCG? NO, but it is under a cover. Plug Wires- I don't know if "Marine" exist for gm hei, never looked, I use taylor wires without a problem.
Safe? I don't know, but I wrench/thrash on my own stuff, and I'm always keeping an eye on things under the hatch.

If anyone out there has a HEI distributor setup for a 1975 455 Olds let me know I may be interested.

Im running Taylor wires A/C spark plugs.my marine Mallory wore out .im running a stock recurved dist with Petronix points conversion.

i did the pertronix conversion kit on my 455 olds dizzy and it works fine, no complaints. i have regular auto wires as well with ac delco plugs and my motor is completely exposed. also no complaints. just depends on the prefrence i guess
