Title: 455 square exhaust manis
Post by: wanabe on January 14, 2008, 03:43:28 PM
I meant to post this before the bidding ended in case someone here was interested but I forgot about them.
Anyone seen these square manifolds before? I think they would look pretty good.

Those are the standard Olds 455 Berkeley Packajet manifolds.

They're plumbed different than a standard log manifold. Instead of the logs preheating the water by running it to the logs first, the water goes directly into the motor, then the dumps feed the water inlets on the manifold. It then dumps through the risers.

Those set-ups also used a clunky iron 2 piece thermo housings and car type water pump for a recirculating system.  The logs are jacketed to the riser so you need both pieces. Heres a pic of the housing and risers.  Also the manifolds only use 4 bolts each and you have to access them through holes on the exterior that are pluged with pipe plugs.

OK; bottom line on this is to stay away from this type of exh mani; correct?

I would. Another thing about them is they are known for cracking along the bottom of the siamese ports on the center 2 cylinders as well.

If you want to stick with thru-transom exhaust get a set of Glenwood logs or something. Or go over transom headers.

If you need some I have some that you can have, but you have to take the whole engine.

Thanks Jim; as I said in my PM, if you lived anywhere near here I'd take you up on that offer; may just be enough in that 455 to get me back up and running; oh well.

The cool thing is there are some people coming out this way soon for the SCORE race, I am sure someone would have room in there truck to get it back close to you and then maybe someone else can get it even closer and so on.

Just a thought !

I'm condisering taking that hidious thing off of your hands Jim, not sure if I have the same offer as Wanabe but... nevertheless.  I have a 455 that will be done in about a ? week ? which I am going to sell. Once that 455 is sold I'll know what they're worth when they are sitting on a pallet rebuilt and running.
