Title: 460 alternator wiring/not charging
Post by: JB1314 on June 02, 2016, 05:20:41 PM
I have a quick question, my alternator only seems to have two wires coming off of it. Is that right? It is definitely not charging. I don't know if it ever has, I just picked this boat up and it's been sitting for 17 years so I'm pretty sure the alternator is shot. Think I'm going to be safe and just change it do I need a marine alternator?

Volt gauge or amp gauge in dash ? Have u put a voltmeter on the output side of alternator? To make sure it's not charging
I run a automotive alternator ...

Ummm rookie question... The output is the big red wire right. Wow did I really have to ask that. Apparently!

I would also guess it's shot. I run a 130amp 3G ford alternator on mine. The gm three wire is good too.

Did you get this from the big box stores or did you have to order it?

I'm kinda going through the same thing only I have a yellow to purple, I don't know where it's  supposed to connect I thought I knew where it was supposed to go but when I turn the ignition key off the boat kept running so that's obviously not where it's supposed to be to charge my battery is anybody know where I'm supposed to hook the purple wire up   "see pictures"

I run a single wire alternator too it's a breeze to hook up I'll never change it.

Got the new alternator from DB electrical. Super cheap and got here quick! Couple questions,

1) the new alternator has a smaller diameter mounting hole on top and won't fit on the rod coming out of the block, just barely. Can I drill this out or is there like a reducer fitting to change rod?

2) lame question but does this fan look like its a cw rotation?

3) am I over complicating the install? The old alternator has two wires. I take it only the power is used?

Thanks SCJB

The new one is a GM 10SI alternator.

1) Typically that mounting diameter is 3/8" bolt or stud. I've drilled them out for non standard applications- Ford diesel, John Deere, 262 Cummins, etc.

2) Yes. the fan pulls air through the alternator, fresh air enters the back. Alternators don't care about which way they rotate.

3) Old alternator has a 'keyed on' wire, as well as a charge wire. New one just has a charge wire. Eliminate the 'keyed on' wire.

I had a one wire alternator for a bit. Kept drawing off battery and eventually it got burned up. Don't they have built in diodes?

Thanks Mash on it! Installed and looks to be pushing 14 volts. We will find out in Blythe!

These 1 wire alternators can drain a battery while sitting.
Just unhook or shut the batteries off when its sitting in the driveway.

Looks good

Stupid question.  The wire wire alternator goes straight to the battery?
