Steering cable stiffness
« on: June 21, 2017, 05:19:14 PM »
Just a question here . I bought a new telafax rack and pinion a few years back . The boat has sat a few years because of lakes being low in my area . Now I'm using it agin and the steering is super stiff . So is there a way to lube or get the stiffness out for the season or should I just buy another new one . I would think they should last more than 4 years . I already took it out and tryd to spray some lube in but it's still stiff. Thanks any help is greatly appreciated.

I do believe they are disposable. I have never heard of a way to save them

I used marvel mystery oil. Right now is a good time because it is so hot. I left mine in the sun and poured very little at a time down the sleeve. Took some time ,but it worked better than it did. Worked it back and forth. Mine has 3 seasons on it. Trick is to route it in such a way that water cant run in and settle at a low point. Almost dropped 170 for a new one but I saved it. Feels like it will last at least this season. On the water it felt pretty good. Good luck
