The CJ in the valley doesn't ring any bells?

It looks to be a 1970 D0VE-A block casting. D0VE-A should be cast into the side of the engine block by the starter motor and reading vertically. The "CJ" in the lifter valley means nothing in regards to the D0VE block's strength, etc, although a really geeky restoration guy with a 1970 Cobrajet Mustang might like having that feature on his block.  If the heads are C8VE-E heads then they are really nice heads when ported, basically identical to C9VE and non-Thermactor D0VE castings.

Could it be a 1978 460 Cobra Jet motor?
Ford never made a 460 Cobrajet and there were no Cobrajet engines in 1978. Ford made a 429 Cobrajet in 1970 and a 429 Super Cobrajet in 1971. There was a 460 Cobrajet on the drawing boards but EPA emissions and gas prices killed the engine before it made production.

Thanks LO
I knew you would chime in. Yes they are D8VE-E I will check the block casting when I get home.
IN picked it up of 100.00
History is it had miss fire and was pulled out of a jetboat
I will tear it down this week, it has a Dooley pan and svo 1.73 roller rockers
Manley push rod guides.
Hopefully I get lucky and it has a bitchen lower end too

The "D0VE-A" on the side of the cylinder block is not a date code not is it specifically decodable as implied by your post. In fact D0VE-A blocks were used in Mustang Cobrajets, Torino Cobrajets, Ford LTD sedans and LTD station wagons, Ford Thunderbirds, Lincoln Continentals, Mercury Marquis sedans and station wagons, Mercury Marauders, etc, etc, etc, basically anything that had a 429 or a 460 in 1970 or 1971 could have had a D0VE-A block in it. And possibly a few very late production 1969 vehicles. Generally, the D0VE-A cylinder block may be found in 1970 Ford-Lincoln-Mecrury passenger cars that came equipped with a 429 or a 460.
