460 ford, holley 850, mallory marine distributor
well before i put the motor away last it ran and fired fine. Go to start it up yesterday and all it wants to do is pop out of the carb, headers and miss on the start. i cant get it to run.
Cleaned the carb and put new accelerator pump pumps, power valves, needle and seats, gaskets.
Cleaned the rotor and pick up, locked out at 36* total
iam out of ideas. maybe the cam went flat???? :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Maybe a vacuum leak

Also ruled that out :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Mine was doing that to bad and I set my timing to 36 like you and had to go more

I set my timing with a vacuum gauge

I would go back to square 1 and treat it like a new build with un-known parts. Start with #1 TDC pull the cap and verify your timed right. Make sure you didn't shear a distributor gear pin. Check voltage at the coil. Crank it and check spark intensity. Cam's don'[t go flat sitting in the garage, but maybe lifter bleed off? Is it a hydraulic cam? Does it sound like hit has good compression when you crank it, smooth even cranking?

Do you have any "friends" that would "adjust" your spark plug wires while you weren't looking. Say, just for fun?
Not that I'm aware of this type of shenanigans happening before >:D but you never know.

Good point. You're not running a BBC firing order on this Ford are you Jake? You know this ain't the Cal Trans race boat buddy. :screwy:

If it was mechanically sound when you parked it, it is unlikely that it is anything mechanical now. If you have a hydraulic cam, I have had plungers in the lifters stick.
Whenever I used to let mine sit for extended periods of time, I always ended up with a small chunk of bowl gasket in a metering passage or dirt in an air bleed. I usually had to pull the carb apart and blow out every passage. I often didn’t get it the first time.
If you had issues with the accelerator pumps, you would see that as a leak or as a non steady stream when you look in the carb(s) and actuate the throttle.
Just curious, do you drain the fuel out of the carb(s) during the off season? Seems like when I changed to draining the fuel from the carbs, I traded pump gas residuals for dried gaskets.
Back when I ran carbs, I made a habit of bumping the fuel pump to gradually bring up the fuel level in the float bowls so that instant pressure doesn’t shock the needle/seat valves and floats. I have stuck a few and even bent that little tab on the float that pushes on the needle.
As icecreaman stated, “go back to square 1” and verify.
Good luck,
Joe

Actually, the physical firing order is the same if you start with cylinder #5 of the BBF firing order, comparing cylinder location to relative cylinder location.

i just double checked everything. timing is on the money, everything is right so far. Voltage was good everywhere. Changed the coil.
i think ive narrowed it down to the distributor number 4 and 6 are not firing. compression is fine 130 all the way around.

Plug wire? Crack in the distributor cap? I had one of those Crossfire (misfire) distributor caps where the wires for each side of the engine exited that side of the cap. It made wire management look pretty, but the MSD 7AL2 shorted everywhere inside the epoxy filled cap.
How does the fuel discharge look inside the carbs? I really don’t think you have a mechanical issue since you didn’t have one when you parked it. Just be careful looking in the carbs so you don’t burn your eyebrows off. Use a mirror!

Well chit....... dont i feel like a dumb ass..... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
number 4 and 6 were crossed. she fired up like always!
thanks boys!

I'll be there, either in that boat or the tunnel dragster. Maybe the ultra. Idk yet.

My 460 started to back fire and had a unilite... it was a sheared pin that holds the cam/dizzy gear on the shaft. Part was less than a buck.

I was going to say just hit it with a hammer and drink more Beer. Glad you got it figured out ! Have fun!
