New Pistons and cam. What are the steps I should take for the first start up and run?

What cam type? Roller?

The procedures are completely different for flat vs. roller.

Follow the cam manufacturers recommendation,  but to put it simply.

Use either a break in oil designed for flat tappet cams or an oil that has been fortified with a proper amount of zddp.

I use the Comp Cams break in additive.

Get set up in advance.

Thinking light,  garden hose with an inline valve of some sort.

Rags  (in case of any leaks).

Fire extinguisher. Lol.

So, once you get the engine started,  Rev it to about 2,000 rpm as soon as humanly possible,  I use a tie wrap to help open the throttle.

This is a good time to tweak the timing with a timing light.

Every so often (a minute or two) Rev the engine to 3,500 or so and let it run at about 2,000.

Keep the water flowing just enough to keep the motor at about 160°F, the idea is to heat the oil up.

Keep doing this procedure for about 20-25 minutes or until the cops show up.  (Long story)..

Once the time has lapsed,  shut it if after turning off the water and let it cool fully. (Overnight is best,  but at least three or four hours).

Once cool,  run the valves, check the plugs,  dump the oil and filter,  fresh oil and your ready to dial it in.

Carb adjustment,  timing,  fix the leaks you found,  assist fuel pressure, floats etc...

Take it to the lake and beat on it like it owes you money.

I would use joe Gibbs xp4 or vr1. Here is a link for the Joe Gibbs http://www.roadraceparts.com/joe-gibbs-driven-xp4-sae-15w50-racing-oil-quart/ The best price I've found

Not necessarily "high zinc" try to maintain 1500-2000ppm zddp.

Any higher and cam lobes will live,  but the rest of the engine will turn to shit.
