Title: 460 Ford, loud clunk when starting
Post by: ElGringoLoco on April 27, 2019, 04:07:12 AM
I'm pretty certain it's my starter going- but I wanted to confirm my suspicions. I've got a 460 in the boat, blue top battery with full charge, good fuel pressure, fresh gas, good spark, etc.  When I turn it over, it will make this loud- metal to metal clunk.  Like a 3lb sledgehammer hitting 1/2" plate.  When I turn the key again- the engine will turn over.  It happens when the engine is hot or cold.  No grinding, or winding- just the clunk.  This leads me to believe the solenoid is getting hung up, or the starter motor is just worn out.  Am I crazy?

Pull the starter and check it.
