Olds 455 cam selection
« on: June 28, 2015, 10:18:10 AM »
Well I ended  deciding to completely go through my 455  instead of just ring and bearing it.  Its going to be just shy of 10.1  9.89 is the actual number we came up with the heads are stock Ka for now I'm going to port them and install under cut manly valves  I'm running an offy tunnel ram with 2 660 Holley's and headers     I just can't pick a cam  that has both the duration @ .50 and lift I like  I'm lookin to spin the a/b   impeller to about 55-5700   all the oil mods will be done  I'm also going to be running either main straps or a girdle

What kind of power does it take to spin an AA 5000.  I'm hoping to be in the 475-500 range

What kind of power does it take to spin an AA 5000.  I'm hoping to be in the 475-500 range

AA American Turbine @ 5K ~505hp
A2 Berkeley @ 5K ~475hp
Both figures from the impeller charts

I was spinning 4600-4700 before  with logs and and the old cam   244@.50 with .463 lift

I'm at 225*/231* @ .050, .567"/.578", Hyd roller, in a 454, AA (American Turbine) at 5K thru logs and snails

As far as an Olds? I don't know. 244* seems like a lot of duration for logs and snails.

That's how it was when I bought it   I didn't think the cam was that big at least on the duration side  but that what my dad and I figured when we put the degree wheel on it   its a clay smith grind   I was told it supposed to flow like a 500/300° cam   it doesn't look like a typical hyd can lobe  more like a roller  lobe with a quick ramp and it stays at max lift for awhile

Just to add my 2 cents 5000 is to much for an olds. 4700 should be max. The other thing I would look to do to your motor is shave the heads down .060 . Oh and fill the heat riser passage. There are a lot of little things one can do to get a lot out of an olds motor.

I'm no stranger to the olds engine  I've built a few of them for cars  one that spun 6000  and lasted about 38000 miles with probably 1000 passes  that was my daily for 3 years  that car went 10.80 at lacr on used street tires on a 150 shot
