Starting to get a game plan together on a 496 build. Plan on a full roller setup.but not quite sure on heads? Can get a done up set of 049's or I can buy afr's. I know I'll have more money in the afr heads along with the weight loss but is it worth the difference in price? Not even sure what afr heads to order 265's? I can get a bare set around $1500 or pay that for done 049's? Plan around 10-10.5 on the compression.

Chevy guys should be along shortly... I'd say go with aftermarket. Just my .02 cents.

i would go with AFR's, Brodix, or dart. All great aluminum heads. I have the brodix BB2 xtras and they are great. they flow 365 right out of the box

I agree with ^. I have a set of dart 180s on my 355 and they work great. Afr's are the best bang for your buck so if you can afford them I would run those. I would stay away from patriot or edelbrock. Also just my .02

I'm building a 496 also I got a set of Merlin 3 heads complete for 1600 but the engine builder is a friend and he gave them to me at his price.
stay away from the 990s even though there a good head you have to replace the valve seats the ones I took off had 4 cracks in them. chevy didn't make them to run on corn

Have not posted here in a while cause I don’t have my boat anymore. I do however follow posts though.
Anyway, to take advantage of your cubic inches put some Brodix BB2s CNC ported on that and never look back. I know they are $$ up front but if you buy a set of used Irons you still are going to have to take them to a machine shop and have them gone over. Save this money and put that toward a set of new brodix heads. I did the same thing you did when my boat was N/A. I spend good money on a set of Irons and in reality it was a waste. When I went with the blower set up it was a no brainer to go with the Brodix heads. Mine were ready to go out of the box and the springs even matched my roller cam requirements. When I sold the Brodix heads 4 seasons later, I got a little less than I paid for them. You cannot do that with irons.

If you are talking about the 496 you just picked up then the flat top pistons are going to be an issue with your target CR. You would need a combustion chamber around 100-105cc to get 10-1 (ballpark). That doesn't give you to many choices.

I just finished my 496 build bottom end came with dome pistons and have a set of brodix bb-2 heads
comp is somwere in between 10.5-11. Brodix heads are good i heard the afr's are better but i like what i got and i can also use the heads on my next build for a 540.good luck with the build
