Title: A few engine questions...
Post by: Baja and Bust on May 10, 2009, 06:51:11 PM
This may seem a bit novice but I'm only asking because I would like to educate myself.  You guys are such a good plethora of knowledge I know my questions will be answered here.  Thanks in advance.

First - What is the difference between a marine and non marine carburetor and intake manifold?  Also for a distributor.

Second - I heard of using spark plugs with a lower heat range due to the lower operating temperature of our motors...  Is there any truth to that?  Any recomendations on a good set of hi-po plugs to use?

Third - The Edelbrock carb on my boat has an electric choke and the previous owner did not have it connected.  Is this due to the lower operating temperature on our boats would have the choke always on?

Fourth - Any good threads going on all this kind of stuff already?  Point me in the right direction?  I did a search and rifled through the existing tech ones and nothing caught my eye.

Thanks again for the answers/suggestions/references.  You guys rock!

Ok, Someone else will chime in knowing more than me, hopefully, and easily done.

#1, Marine carbs have curved bowl vents that aim excess fuel and vapors back to the venturis, as well as some other internal differences. never heard of a marine Intake manifold, but there are also marine fuel pumps with an extra outlet designed to go to a nipple on the flame arrestor to flood the engine out in case of a fuel pump diaphram failure.

#2 hadn't heard this, but might make some logical sense. Though with todays technology on spark plugs, would seem a mute point.

#3 to Quote 2Sav, "Choke, whats a Choke?" Remove it.

#4, probably, but I'm too tired to go looking either.

First - Ray is right about the carb and fuel pump.  The aluminum marine intake has brass lined water jackets to prevent corrosion...usually made for Mercruiser or other marine engine manufacturers.

Second - I would think the opposite would be true...you want a higher temp plug for colder engines.

Third - The electric chokes are completly adjustable...but you need a keyed hot wire at the carb.  Instructions for adjustment are on Edlebrock's website.  Most guys don't run em

Fourth - I think you just started a good thread.

The differences are somewhat obvious, the carbs in a marine classification have a spaecial bowl vent to dissallow the fuel to overflow the bowl, the intake manifolds have brass inserts in the aluminum version water ports, the cast iron versions there is no difference., the distributor has no vacuum advance and has spark arrestors in the vents.

Second - I heard of using spark plugs with a lower heat range due to the lower operating temperature of our motors...  Is there any truth to that?  Any recomendations on a good set of hi-po plugs to use?

I would disagree, I would use a higher or stock range...

Third - The Edelbrock carb on my boat has an electric choke and the owner does not have it connected.  Is this due to the lower operating temperature on our boats would have the choke always on?

Nope  ;D

Fourth - Any good threads going on all this kind of stuff already?  Point me in the right direction?  I did a search and rifled through the existing tech ones and nothing caught my eye.

 ;) :sly:

BTW; GM made numerous factory style aluminum intakes for the marine industry with bronze water port inserts. They are all but considered rare now...
