Title: A little help please
Post by: GlassCutter on January 21, 2008, 12:42:33 PM
I found a guy who is selling a motor he claims was built by Hardin Marine. Story is that it came out of a boat that burned and he picked it up and put it in his Trans Am. All he can really tell me about it is that it is tunnel rammed and aluminum rods. He claims he pulled the pan off to verify the rods. It is currently running in his T/A and sounds real good. Soooo  is this a good motor for a big heavy never-will-be-fast daycruiser. I know I wouldn't run Al rods on the street but . . .
Any advice is worth what I am paying for it I know.

I'd figure on replacing the Alum. rods before running it. Minus that from the price and see if it's still a good deal.

Thanks for the reply. I am kinda confused as to why a reputable shop would build an Olds so serious as to justify aluminum rods. And who the hell makes alum rods for an Olds?  I wish this guy could have been a little more help but he sounded like I just woke him up at noon.

the rods will be fine that motor probley dont make enough power and has never seen enough heat to stretch them plus there made to stretch a little its not like it was a nitro motor that produces alot of heat gas motors are fine with the alu   i ran alu in my small block chevy nova that ran 9.20s in the .25 plus drove to the local street races every fri and sat good luck  :)

Go with cash in hand and have him pull the motor and then yank the pan so you can see the rods yourself. If he isn't okay with that then take your money & run.
