Accelerator pump question
« on: June 13, 2014, 02:41:34 PM »
I have a Holley 650 I believe and the accelerator pump is leaking bad.  I know I need to replace the diaphragm but I don't know where to get one ASAP.  Also are there different sizes.  And how can I be sure I get the right one.  I am in Corona and don't know of any places near by.

Different colors for different volumes.

Providing original Holley parts were used in the past.

Hit me with the list# and I can come up with a part#...

It is likely a 134-12 (30cc) or a 135-14 (50cc).

Where can I find the list number?  I took the air filter off and found 1850-5 and 0842 right underneath that.

And just so I'm sure, what I'm pointing at is the accelerator pump right?  And should I just change the diaphragm or the whole thing?  I only know enough to be dangerous.

Yes, you are pointing to the accelerator pump.  I am sure just the diaphram.  Call Steve at J&M and he can help you with the numbers.  Tell him hi from Joe from Custom Engineering. You shouldn't need to replace the whole thing unless you are changing the volume (BTW, don't do that).

I can't remember the exact size, it should be the standard 30cc (I think) diaphragm.

The 1850-5 is a 600 cfm carb with vacuum secondary's. if it hasn't been modified it comes stock with a 30cc pump. I have two on top of my tunnel ram and they work great.

Problem is I think the carb has been modified some.  Would I be able to tell which diaphragm if I took it off and looked at it?

The 50cc pump bowl is deeper. Go to holley's website and you can see the difference in the two

And real quick because I forgot what it looked like when I pulled it off, but the raised side of the diaphragm goes into the bowl if the housing.  Am I correct?

Yes your correct and that's a standard holley accelerator pump just buy a renew kit for it the number of the carb is stamped on the choke housing .you can check the metering block the number on it should match the choke number,  also you're going to need a butterfly drive or clutch head screw driver bit to get the metering plate off of the rear of the carb to rebuild it.

And real quick because I forgot what it looked like when I pulled it off, but the raised side of the diaphragm goes into the bowl if the housing.  Am I correct?

The spring goes into the float bowl first, the concave side of the diaphragm goes over the spring, and last the accelerator pump cover and arm go over raised side of the diaphragm.  The spring opens pushes against the float bowl and the diaphragm to expand the volume to draw fuel from the bowl into the accelerator pump.  When you mash the throttle, the linkage actuates the arm which pushes the diaphragm forcing the volume of fuel to move past the check valve, through the body, and discharge through the discharge nozzle(s).  Just remember, the spring acts against the linkage arm to pump the fuel.  Without this, fuel will not be drawn into the accelerator pump.
