Yesterday while out on the water I noticed my volt meter was low and sure enough I had to jump it off to get underway again. I replaced it with a new one and didn't seem to work so I figured I had a broken wire so I found close to the end near the battery the wire was broken so I repaired it. I then started the boat and it read about 13 volts so I assumed I had fixed it. I then saw smoke and found the alternator was hot and smoking. I clipped the wire and that's how it sits.
Any ideas on what's going on with it?
I'm assuming what is causing this but up the other one.

Had the same problem last summer .. battery was shorted internally
-
Just had it tested and it tested out to be ok but needs a charge. I left it there at auto parts store for them to charge and re-test

Mine showed just under 13 volts. Not saying for sure thats what it is. Keep it in mind as a option

How do I test for the short? They just called it said it's fine.

Could be a loose plate in the battery. If you can, pull a battery from somethin else and give it a shot

Also I cannot find an alternator that has the fan turning the right direction. Is there a part # for a 460 ford alternator that has the fan in the right direction?

If anything, take the pulley off and swap the fan. If you're local, there's a shop in Rialto that does good work. Tonys starter & alternator. I've had him do several for me .. under $60 with a warranty

Or get numbers off thw alternator you have, anf look on ebay

Look up the Mando alternators, they took over for the Motorola dealios...

Ok, today I went to a local shop today that rebuilds alternators and they sold me a marine alternator and put the reverse fan on it for me. They said that if I rebuilt the motorolla it was not going to be worth it because its more expensive than buying one of their marine ones and it only puts out like 30-40 amps when theirs puts out 70.
It cost me 89 bucks....
Im going to put the battery back in, iv'e already mounted the alternator, but im going to put an inline fuse on the main line leaving out to my main switch panel so hopefully I can isolate the problem if its coming from something up front shorting out the thing.
The battery I have is a optima red top and they swear by it that they never go out or give problems. The auto parts store claims someone wrecked their car and one of the cells was broken of the battery and it still worked.
With all that being said, Brand new stuff can be bad too ...
Did I mention in the first post that when i hook up the wire from the alternator it pulls down the motor a few hundred rpms at idle.
That cant be right?
I'm surprised that if it is something up front that i haven't seen smoke coming out from under the dash.

Im not sure what the problem was but I put it all together and put an inline fuse just to be safe leaving out headed to the front.
Works perfect and showing 14 volts on the gauge now. O0
