need serious help with fuel tanks

Have a 18' kona with 455 olds.. Just got the boat last summer. When I picked it up both fiberglass tanks (2 10's) were full of gas that had been sitting for over 6 years. Drained it the best I could. But no matter what I do I'm still sucking bad gas from the tanks.. I don't know what to do.. Is there away to flush the tanks? Or do I need to cut them out and build new ones? If so I will need some guidance on what to do! Thanks guys, Jacob

that is going to depend how much is still in there! your best bet is to take them to your local radiator shop and have them hot tanked!at the same time they will pressure test them!

Will that require me removing the tanks from the boat? Or can they do it while still in the boat? Thats my whole problem the tanks are glassed in and want to try and avoid cutting them out.. thanks

I would strongly recommend getting rid of the glass tanks and replacing with aluminum or stainless. Modern fuel tends to break down the resins, and you end up with the problem you're experiencing, as well as leaks, fire, etc....

I recently went through this. I had fiberglass tanks in my hallett and the passenger side tank was leaking. I tried to patch it up again and again. But no luck. I finally had to find some aluminum tanks and put them in my boat. But like others have said....get rid of those fiberglass tanks as soon as possible. It is just an accident waiting to happen. Take it from me.

Used saddle tanks are easy to find...Like if someone is parting out a boat. Post a pic of your boat/tanks/interior set up. Try a WTB in this site and performance boat spam...you might find a set for free.

Like these guys have said, the resin breaks down with newer fuels and WILL leak eventually. Not fun when you're on the water and have this happen so fix it no before it's too late. Imco makes tanks for marine use or you can look around for someone with spun aluminum ones, there are a few guys around this site that have some for sale just get some measurements to know what is going to fit in your boat. I just picked up some for my boat and will be working on the same repair before the next season starts.
