Title: ANOTHER WIERD ELECTRICAL PROBLEM
Post by: Danger731 on April 06, 2010, 04:17:59 PM
So I have a new starter and starter solenoid switch ( the ford kind).

Intermitently it will feed battery current through to the alternator without the key on. ???wtf ? :banghead:  running on 8 total hours trying to figure this ignition crap out.

It also was running fine and acted fine just prior to this but then it just died while idling so it shut down.....I lost power to the accesories (main power light went out, fuel pump cut off)

Now when I bench check it all is good. The right side main pole has the battery which also feeds the acc. switch on the key. The Left main pole gets the starter. The mini "S" pole gets the 12v from the key in run.

Sounds like a bad connection.
My old boat had alot of the same symptoms.
Back track each wire.
Or at least the breaker switch wires.

Sounds to me like you have a bad solenoid.  They can meter out right but not carry
current.  An ohm meter won't allways tell the whole story.  The fact that it
completes a circuit when it shouldn't is another reason I believe that it's bad.

I'm an industrial electrician and I say the above based on a guess from what you described.
Without seeing a print of your circuit that's the best I can do.

Good luck   :)

i would agree..

its either that or bad wires/connection somewhere

bad grounds will cause all kinds of dumb problems

When you shake the solenoid it hits current to the starter. Also shaking it you can hear a very slight rattle. Maybe I got a defective one ?

Also not addressed to the noid, I still lost power during the run. ..

well got a new solenoid and shook it. It doesn't rattle like the last brand new one I bought. go figure.

Yeah, had it running fine in the driveway. Went to the water and it would turn over but not start. Very depressing. I got spark n gas. Once in a while it runs for a few minutes then shuts down. I think the gas may be bad.  :banghead:
