Hey guys got a question? I was thinking about taking my snails off my logs and welding up just some straight pipes for it. Do you guys think that would be ok?

Sounds like a PITA to me and for what benefit?  From my experiance having logs and snails is a nice and easy to work around, I have even had coolers land on them while running and didn't even damage the cooler once at our destination.  That sort of old school OT pipe will have it's downside even though it will probably be louder, not much of a performance gain for the effort.

you can remove your logs and swap out to dry headers sure. hell you could swap to some zoomies.  it'll be a shitload louder and you probably wont see any gains on the butt dyno at all with a stock/mild motor.  you'll also need to plug the holes in your transom and change your plumbing accordingly.


id suggest at LEAST wet headers OR you can do "wet thru-transom headers" if you are not running a hatch.  these get hotter than your logs and if you run a hatch over the motor your boat will go up in a blaze of glory.  the wet TT headers will keep the sound level bearable and look great. 



if you run a hatch you can always go centerrise and be prepared to light your wallet on fire.   but for most applications logs work "just fine"

Ok I would love to run tt headers but I got a 403 olds and they are a lot of money. and for some reason I can't find the ot pipe's for the logs cause that's what I thought of doing.

ahh ok that makes sense then.  sure you can take a piece of stainless and make a flange that blocks off the back of the log so they stay sealed with water to cool, and then have tubes that go over the transom that are dry.  this pic shows what the ends of your logs will look like without the riser, so you can see that you'll need to block off those water passages.



just know they'll be hotter than hell.  they'll be loud.  you might have to do some type of slide in baffle to stay legal with your local lake/laws.  open dry exhaust is usually frowned upon.  if you look in the pic they have a regular bassett "tee" that opens over 1500rpms or so that dumps water in the veeeery last 8" or so of the exhaust pipe so its "wet".

That helps a lot thanks. did you make those? and how do you get the water to come out after 1500 rpm? is stainless the only way to go or just the best? also did the wrap help at all for heat? and what passage's will I have to block off? I would run those water lines in the last few inches to.

nope i didnt make that.  just know that you're not the first person to do something like this.  OT logs have been around for a long time.  Controlling the water flow is done by a "bassett tee" which gets plumbed into your water lines and it has a little spring inside, etc that opens when the pressure gets to a certain point over idle so that the exhaust pushes the water out of the pipes rather than letting it run back down.  they're not expensive and im sure someone here has one laying around for sale.



As far as stainless/aluminum you can do whatever you want... I'm not sure if aluminum will like all the vibrations along with having to hold up the weight of the pipes.  As far as the water supply, its more of a "legal" thing so that the exhaust is wet so its not as noisy.
