Don't spend too much for it.
I just purchased a very nice one for a friend who doesn't do e-bay (Chevy Vertex with cap and wires delivered for $320.00).
He is going to replace bottom housing and the drive to make it fit a Hemi (cheeper for us to get one for a Chevy and change it over, than to find one for a Hemi).
When you get it be sure to spin the shaft quickly to make sure everything spins free >:D ;) ;D

It's usually best to have the cap off so you can visually check for spark as well. Another method is to put a good spark plug into a wire and ground it back to the mag base, look for the spark.

Lotsa different kinds and prices out there, what are we talkin about? My Msd Mag would run ya 2 g's and it's the baby one (12 Amp). A decent sprintmag may be had for a hundo or two. Some mags are self contained, some have TRANSFORMERS (not coil) and some dont. Some are for short runs only and some are for undurance.

I picked up a Vertex awhile back as well. Eventually for Pickles new momo. Many types out there, but all good advice so far. One thing they haven't mentioned is in using one, takes a lot of starter to get the engine to fire.......
