Have a company on ebay selling a 460 longblock marine rebuilt motors . warranty for a year .My local builder wants 2000 just for a rebuild. Motor is fine just has a small rod knock . What do you guys think ?Companies feedback is good.

Generally, not a good idea. I would, personally, PM Dave at A&D (enginedoctor on here), Paul (Lakesonly on here), or Barry (Obnoxious001 on here). If you don't have a machine shop or assembler locally you can trust (Sounds like you don't), these are people you CAN. Ebay, well, kinda like russian roulette IMO. Deals CAN be had, I've scored a couple, but you have to be on your toes and ask a LOT of pertinent questions.
Any of the above three will save you some serious money and can probably use your existing engine as a platform. In the end, you'll have a quality result they will stand behind, and probably a lot cheaper than the Ebay guys.
Think about this for a minute though. All the local shops I deal with don't use Craig's list, or rarely do, or Ebay (At all!). They are so busy they cannot handle the volume that might entail, and are not interested in being bigger. If a shop is using Ebay, well, I would figure where they are. If like LA, NY, NJ, or any other major metro center, I would steer clear. They've likely already killed their home crowd and are looking for new victims!

I would ask what brand parts etc they use. What clearances ring type piston type what year parts such as block, head castings etc etc. If they have a large feedback number and satisfy you with what they are using give them a try.
The feedback is the big alarm I watch. If they have less than 1000 feedbacks I wouldn't buy anything
large from them.
It seems when someone builds up negative feedback they change their name. That's why I look for high feedback numbers.
It's buyer beware, so make sure you ask every question before you bid.
Don't lose a potential bargain by avoiding ebay. Just make sure you ask the right questions so you know your getting one.

Start a relationship with a local builder. Shop around until you find one that is reputable and with whom you hit it off. If that's your current guy that is offering a rebuild for $2000, then great.
As for us I don't know that we would offer a jet boat longblock for $2000/core exhange, at least not how we would prepare such an engine. I would be curious what will be done to your engine for just $2000, as that is pretty damn inexpensive. But it just so happens that we will be assmbling a longblock that would certainly be capable...mostly stock parts (Stage 1 block, ported iron heads, OEM crank, rods, & pistons, etc) pump gas 9.2:1 compression, RV cam, roller chain, ~400 hp....not sure on the price just yet but will be more than $2000 And certainly worth whatever asking price we settle on.

I was guessing that was a labor only quote on rebuilding his, not including parts, since no one I know can tell what needs to be done to an egnine without first taking it apart?
I guess it could be some kind of rebuilt longblock like some of the auto parts stores sell,, not much quality in those, certainly not something I would recomend in a jet boat that runs about twice the rpm level of a normal street engine.

yea did some one throw a #1rod and piston in the garage because they were on crack >:D ;D
