I have a 454 BBC and a Panther pump. I have the typical ball valve controlling the water from the pump. My question is where do I start to find the right position of the valve? I took it out Sunday and cruised around all day. Once it warmed up the temp was around 150 and the highest got to 160. Obviously its not to hot is this a good setting. I just guessed on where to open the valve and its about half way open. If I close it will the motor get hotter? Im afraid of to much pressure and blowing gaskets. Please tell me how to adjust it. I dont have anything on the end to control water on the way out. It hooks to the transom and spits the water back into the lake. Thanks for the help. Im a rookie for sure.

That's where mine runs. I'd leave it be. According to Tom at JBP, no way you can get too much pressure unless you have another problem. I ran a pressure releif valve from him JIC, but ran my ball valve wide open. To my knowledge the pressure valve has not opened yet, but I've only run with chebbies and noone close enough to tell me if the dump is spitting or not. ;D

I ran it on the trailer with a hose and it was dumping out pretty good. The hose was only half way on too. I didnt run it long enough for the temp gauge to even move. I think I will leave it where its at. Sounds like a good starting point. Im paranoid for the milk shake effect. Is 160 a good temp to be at? If I close it more the temp should go up right? It ran like a champ where it was. Thanks for your respone Irrebel. I have been watching your build to. You boat is coming along nicely. let me know what you guys think.

average healthy residential water pressure is +/- 60 psi, so your bypass is working as it should. Also you cannot control pressure with your ball valve, only volume. I am hoping to get my temp up to 160* when I get mine back out with new thermostat set-up.

160 is good, I would actually try opening up the valve. You'll probably find the temp doesn't move. If you're paranoid like me and 2Sav, run a pressure releif valve set at 15 or so with the overflow to another overboard dump. I'm afraid of milkshakes too, and for $75 bucks or so for everything you need to add it in, cheap insurance.
Thanks about the Moo boat. Pretty much done. Tunnel ram tomorrow, and some minor touches, she's finished.
I'll cya on the lakes this summer probably, I'm kinda hard to miss.

What would opening the valve more do? If I were to restrick the flow alot then it would run hot right? Hey Poverty, if it doesnt control pressure then would it be ok to run the valve wide open? I'm so afraid of blowing up gaskets. So far everything is looking good. Should I leave it where its at and watch the temp gauge?

All you're going to do by opening the valve is increase flow through the engine. Not a bad thing,( as long as you do NOT follow by my example and run a loose hose clamp somewhere) will help eliminate any air pockets, or small bits of 'matter' (Leaves, other stuff that may get sucked into your system and cause a blockage). Your temp guage is reading temp AT THAT 1 POINT, doesn't mean it's not overheating, or not even getting water, elsewhere in the engine. Say, where an air pocket may be trapped.

If your worried about the milkshake dealio, a water pressure gauge is a worthwhile investment IMO. Water temp is not as important as oil temp. IMO Ball valves are too sensitive , I'd recommend a gate valve.JMHO

Where do you install a water pressure gauge? On the outlet where the water goes back to the lake? I agree on the oil temp as apposed to the water temp. Im just paranoid being a new to me boat.

I agree w/ the cowman, sounds like you have a pressure relief valve. It looks like this...

which means no pressure problems from either the hose or the jet.

Water pressure gauge installs on your intake manifold.

yep, if you have a pressure relief valve it takes care of volume and pressure...the idea was to bring the water pressure down to like 13-15 psi, like it is in a cars radiator.

Just don't start moving things around opening the valve you'll hurt that motor.

Kind of sounds like I should leave it where its at and watch it. I will check tomorrow and see if I have a pressure relief valve.
