Title: Bassett Wet Header Steam Issues

I recently purchased a 79' Rayson Craft jet boat. It has a BBC 502 with Bassett wet headers. I drove it for the first time this weekend. I noticed that hen I opened the header water valve once the boat was planed, I noticed that sometimes the steam would come out both exhausts, sometimes one, sometimes the other. Their was no consistency. The intake splits shortly after the intake from the jet, runs to my valve under the seat then back to the exhausts.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Post by: herrhauptman on July 14, 2014, 06:16:59 PM: I run a similar setup, and it does the same thing. It probably has to do with fluid (water) taking the path of least resistance. It seems to vary without any apparent reason. Keep in mind the whole system is kind of crude, however it more or less does what it is intended to do, which is to keep the headers from glowing red hot. I have run mine for over a decade, and it has never caused any issues beyond not looking "quite right". By your description, I am guessing that you are not flooding your exhaust system with water, and that is a good thing. Too much water into the headers can really do some damage to the engine.

Beyond that, remove the water lines and make sure the injection bungs and lines are clear.
