I have one in my boat.  Pretty reliable.  I haven't had any iling problems but I have heard about the problems.  They make a 10 qt oil pan for it, that's probably one of the best investments you can make for it.

As long as your aren't trying to get too much power from them they are ok, turn the RPM's too high and without a lot of Machine work you are asking for trouble... just what I heard.  BTW I have a bunch of OLDS 455 parts for sale including Dooley 10qt pan.

olds engines are good as long as there are no high rpms.they cant handle them. want high rs you have to go chevy. Or spend a lot of $$$$$$.

According to the articles that I have read you will typically get more HP out of a stock marine Olds than a stock marine Ford or marine Chevy. You woun't get as much RPM out of a modified Olds as you will a modified Ford or a modified Chevy. Most of the oiling problems in the Olds is oil getting back down into the oil pan, dissassembly and an air hammer takes care of most of the oiling issue's. A bigger oil pan is also an excellant idea, especially for the Olds. There's a guy on this site somewhere (?) that know's A LOT about Olds engine's so maybe he'll chime in later...   ???   ;D

I didn't write the articles I read, I just read them.   ;)

I'm waiting for an Olds owner to argue the fact that stock marine Olds engines generally make more HP than stock marine Ford or Chevy engines.   ???

That don't mean anything. I build a dever hydro with a two speed that had a stock 454, that ran 102.

Ya i was just curious. Mine will only turn 4400 but then again the pump is pretty tight. I don't think that is very high at all.

I am kind of in the same boat (pun intended) as I am unhappy with the perf of the Olds in my new boat, but I know a awful lot is being asked of it to pull a 23ft boat around with the speed I am used to in my 18ft 400cu in Horizon. I have seen at least 3 complete nearly new Olds for sale under $1500.  I don't know whether it make sense spend big $$$ to change over. I have always been a Mopar guy and I haven't ruled out going that route either. Does anyone know it I can get 450-500 ft/lbs of torque down low out an OLds 455 for cheap. I don't care about ever seeing 60mph.
