Title: BBC 468 in a Jet with Bassett Stacks - Water Injection - Questions.
Post by: tekati on February 23, 2010, 02:00:33 PM
I picked up this boat this last weekend.  There are two regular lever valves one in the back by the Jet that controls the water intake for the engine.  One in front of the motor for controlling the water to the wet stacks.  The problem is I don't know exactly how to control them.  I was told too much water to the motor with the cam that is in it will cause water to back up in to the engine (bad).  The amount of the water going to the stacks will do the same if too much and blue the stacks if too little.

So my question is how does one solve these?  I could mount a remote valve near the driver for the water for the stacks and just shut it down or low at idle and open it at higher RPM's etc.  There has to be a easier way.

What is the procedure that I should be adjusting these valves by?

Is there another piece of hardware I can use to solve these issues?

The pros will be along shortly Im sure. These guys are awesome.
I know that the valves dont need to be open much at all. Like 1/2 turn. All you need in the header is enough to get it wet. And below 1500 rpm should be dry. Also doesnt need much at all off the pump. Do you have dump lines?

Correct me if Im wrong guys

Also how is it routed?

Well, here is my take.....In a perfect world, buy a Banderlog electronically controlled valve, you can adjust the actual RPM that you want it to open, this is by far the most idiot proof way to do it (not calling anyone an idiot BTW  ;) ).

If funds are as tight for you as they are for me, get a Bassett control valve, these are stupid simple and are basically just a ball and a spring that opens allowing water to flow to the headers, they are a little prone to getting debris in them, so either use a sand filter or have a secondary means of control (manual valve) or both even...It is important to have the valve closed at anything less than about 1500 RPM (depends on engine) and open only above that.

I vote Banderlog if all the numbers in your check balance book are black, mine are mostly RED

Good luck either way... ;)

I would open the valve at your intake (near your pump) to 1/2 open, then leave it alone. You'll almost NEVER need to adjust it.

As for the header water valve, I run a Rex Marine header control valve up by my seat, I only open it once I'm on plane and rolling.
Make sure you have at least the same size overboard dumps as you do incoming water and you'll have no worries with regard to pressure in your block.

The Banderlog valve, $275.

I'm in Bakerspit too so if you want to get together I'm usually available, I'll help you all I can.

Do you know if you have a Bassett T-valve(the ball and spring valve GT was talking about). If so,
that should control the water to your headers. At idle you want a very fine mist or no water at all.
Some guys use the valve at the front of the engine to cut the water of to the headers for racing.
Yea, too little water will blue the headers real quick.

I run the ball valve at the jet, about 1/2 way open like Skip said. To find that spot, I idled the boat until
I got a consistent 180-190 on the temp gauge. But once I accelerate the temp goes down to about 110.

Welcome to SCJB. Is this your first jet?

Is the Banderlog website the only place to find the valve? I like the idea of being idiot proof!
I know Ebay sure doesnt have em.
