Title: BBC 496 ??
Post by: sturat 514 on August 18, 2009, 09:25:28 AM
I know there are many variables to a motor combo but lets say the motor has everything I was told it did on the inside and it is all good and reusable. I have a 496 BBC that seems tight. Has a steel crank HBeam rods solid roller do not know lift or piston type. The motor so say is running 11.0:1 CR. What would it take to make an 800 ish HP pump gas motor or is this even possible? I would say crank rods and pistons could stay I am sure new heads and cam would be in order and if this could happen what would be the best route to take to get there?

800 hp 496 yes .
pump gas no .

Needs more compression and rpm.
More cubes the easier it will be to oblain that number.
Now 600+ hp in a 496 all day long and more reliable I'm sure.

I know.....  ;D

I'm sure someone will chime in with the usual "Hey , I built a 1000 hp small block blah blah blah with a single quadrajunk carb!"
All I can say is research research research !

800 hp 496? Roller cam, AFR heads, a blower, and a whole lot of cash.

Right there is always that someone who is the "one up dude"
I am trying to reasearch now. just brainstroming and seing what is possible with what I have to help keep cost down. Just dumped an a$$ pot in the ford stroker and now want to kick up the 496 i have a bit. Thanks for the information guys and please keep it coming. You can never have to much input

Consider:
1. AFR Heads
2.Mech. roller cam
3. 12 to 1 plus

The Pump Gas part is what has me saying not a chance, really, Stuart.

I'm running right on, or over, the borderline of too much compression, 11:1 or so, (For the oxygenated crap we call premium gasoline here in Arizona), and jury's still out if the engine will hold up to it over the long haul. Runs fine on (And LOVES) 103 octane or better Avgas or Race Fuel, but scares me a little running 91 octane pump gas. Boat won't idle half the time, can notice SOME pinging from time to time, so I try and buy my gas at one place where 93 octane is their premium in town.

I'm probably at, or over, 550 (I say 600, by seat of the pants and given it's acceleration) on Race Gas. On pump gas I'm quite sure I lose better than 50 HP or probably even significantly more. (Given recent carb issues and not running a filter has caused some greif lately). But on Race Gas, will idle (granted a pretty significant lope), at 800 rpm with the lope dragging it to 1100. Sounds badass when it does this in the NWZ. Kinda cool seeing the faces of new passengers seeing the tach bouncing like that too!

If you want 800 HP, blown is the only way you're gonna do it on pump gas, I beleive.

Ray

FWIW, I'd never build an engine this close to borderline again for a boat. Hence the Blower in my kitchen and the other in the garage (And a third to be announced later). I thought I could outsmart the sytem, for lack of a better term, with my hot rodding background, But no, Boats are different, and race/AV gas is not that accessible! I am lucky in that the boat runs at around 140 degrees all day, any more, it would probably detonate like a grenade. Paul, Lakesonly, and Dave, enginedoctor, are EXACTLY right, if you want a reliable turn key engine, listen to both of them.

AV gas is not a problem for me to get. I have a local muni about 15 minutes from the house i can pull up and get fuel from them. I have ran it in the TX and it likes it as i am running 11-1 now. I would love to blow it but the cash gods will not allow it right now. Need to save some coin as i have spent more than i should have already this year on the stroker and buying the TX. Just gonna make due with what i have for the most part for the rest of the season and next.
