Couple questions i have a stock 454 block and picked some heads up that are square port and are bigger than the stock ones that i got with the block how do i know what intake i can run and get the most out of those heads.The next question how big should i machine the block.I know it can get expensive but its a budget build and obviously want a bang for my buck..And not the blow up the motor bang..

Unfortunately the camshaft has as much of a deciding factor for the intake as the heads, it all needs to work together.

I work it backwards....

Heads chooses the pistons (which determines the C/R). I am an oval port fan to the core if under 5.500 RPM.

Cylinder condition determines the bore size (smaller is better for durability due to cylinder wall thickness).

RPM range chooses the camshaft and intake combo, not to mention intention of use and exhaust restrictions....

Define "budget".

The first thing I would do is determine exactly what you've got to work with...post up the block and head casting numbers.

Then, get everything down to a machine shop and have it all cleaned and magged to see if any of it is worth getting excited over.

Then determine what your goals are? What kind of boat is this going in? What was in the boat before? What kind of RPMS did it turn? What kind of speeds did you see? what are you hoping to gain from the new motor? What other parts do you already have on the old motor that you can reuse on the new one if need be? Do you have a crank? rods? rockers? pistons?

well the ideas that i'm throwing around because of research and (simplicity/lack of knowledge) is to get rpm's with a tunnel ram and predator carb.still don't know what kind of cam to make it work.I can put the motor together but can't figure combination's out.

the boat it was in before i never got it finish actually was and 18 ft tahiti not sure of year.had a 455 and jacuzzi pump gave it away cause wanted chevy can't stant olds and the conversion was 2 expensive.so here iam this winter triing 2 build the motor then find a whole orsell my wakeboard boat which ill post this weekend and get a jetboat that way.but boats aint sellin so im back 2 square one build one.ill get numbers of motor when i get back in town thanks 4 the input..

I can't figure this one out. There are no reversion problems with logs, only with headers.

A 454, 10:1 compression, Comp 292, large oval port heads, all else correct = 500 HP on pump gas.

I know this was an old post, but I really liked that combo in my sled, Pulled 5500+ R's on a WJ pump, GPS'd at 71.8 at laughlin.

Those Square port heads are HUGE, you have to run a really big cam and intake to even get those heads to start flowing.

I just got done building my 454 4 Bolt main, Heres the list

.30 over on the block so .30 Over Hyperectectic pistons
.268 comp Marine Cam
Stock cast Oval port heads slightly ported with 427 Corvette valves.
Mellings stock oil pump ( high flow will run the pan dry on high rpms)
Stock port matched intake ( my boat has a covered engine, no room under there)
Heavy valve springs
10 Qt marine pan
Double roller chain
Stock balancer
Stock rods
ARP bolts

I had the Engine built at Bob McKrays performance in Mission Viejo, I didnt touch the thing, Cost me 3000, Estimated 475HP

Only got 2 hours on build not ready to HIT IT yet but it sure feels good when so far probably going to change to a b impeller next to get some more rpm out if it as well as soon as I have it broke in I would like to get at least 5 hours before I start turning over 5k rpm
