Title: bbc chevy "run on" issue
Post by: Willow Wog on May 23, 2011, 08:24:34 PM
So I was helping my buddy yesterday do his cam break in and get ready for next weekend. We fired it and set his timing and went for it cam break in successfull. Well we went to shut it down and nothing. It just kept on running. I guess he had this issue last summer right after he put a new alternator in. He thpught it was his ign switch so he replaced it and never got the boat back in the water before deciding to build this nw motor.  I did the standard tests I.e check for power at the coil with the key on/off and had power only in the on position.  Then I fired it and did the same test and had power in both on and off positions. I'm guessing its got to be getting a current from the alt when running. Its a gm 3 wire alt. Anyone got a wireing diagram? I'm at work tonight and he's at home getting all antsy and already fried his petronics fucking around with it so any help would be appreciated before he does anything else.

The alternator is backfeeding power through the ignition switch.  So wiring there is wrong.  Assuming he has an internally regulated alternator try this diagram.  Your wiring may be different but it gives the general idea.

This is what i did with my 3 wire, and it works great, dont know if it's the right thing to do, but i looked it up and called some experts, i hooked up one and 2 together, and the deal with the plug i ran over to my starter, and it charges great right at 14 volts!

Sounds like it needs a resistor in the wire that energizes the alternator.
The one and two wire together dosen't always work for all gm alternators, but most of them.
