I currently have an 8qt truck pan on my stock 454. I got this pan back in March when I had my motor rebuilt. The mechanic threw it on as a favor because he noticed my motor came with a stock capacity car style pan. The problem is the pan is a bottom drain and the very end of the drain plug head is touching the glass. I ran it for this last season just because it took so much to finally get on the water. Now I'd like to improve it and do a couple other things while motor is out. I don't believe I need a real expensive one but have learned thru this site that there are certain pick ups needed and windage trays, ect.....
I've found a few online and will post pics. I'm finding a lot more 6 and 7qt pans than 8qts. Should I focus on an 8 or is a 7qt good, possibly with using larger capacity filter? Also I've seen MANY different styles of trays inside these pans...?
Any help is much appreciated! Maybe one of you have the perfect used pan I can purchase.?.
Thanks!

I have the Milodon 10qt. marine oil pan, and they also have a pickup for that pan. They are a little pricey though. I know summit sells them

Thanks for reply. I know those are pricey... Is a 10 qt a little over kill for my motor? Or is too much a good thing in this case?

. IMO I think more oil is good. I have a mild built 454 and as far as oil goes I've had no issues.

In the class 5 car that I've been helping with, we actually run an extra qt. of oil. Gotta figure most of the oil is on the top end when your running hard.

you can never have enough oil.
would something like this work for you? 8 in depth. not terribly expensive.

I may be showing my redneckness here, but why not pull the pan, cut the spot-welds around the plug bung and relocate it to the side or the rear?
Be really cheap even if you had to pay someone to weld her up...
Normally the big pans hit the pump intake.
Just a thought.

I think that would work great! I'm a little over 8 1/2" depth now with that bottom plug... Do I need different pick up and is there anything else needed?
Thanks for your other feedback too Baker.

That sounds like the best solution. That way there is no need for a new pick up and you can add another bung so you can run an oil temp sender. Also connect a drain/pump hose with a suction check valve and just pump the oil out. JMO

Hamburger pans makes a 10qt for around $250 a speed shop should be able to get you one and not pay $300 for shipping. Thats what my plan was until I found a deal on a stephs pan
