New intake manifold

I'm about to install a new manifold on my motor abs had a Question. Is silicone needed on the new gaskets? I bought fel pro gaskets. Thanks

Maybe it is just me cause I'm weird this way, but I always put a light skin of Permatex #2 around the water ports and a nice caterpillar bead of RTV for the valley ends, throw the end gaskets away..

X3, except I wipe some of the same sillycone I used to "cast" the front and rear beads wiped with my finger also around both sides of the water ports , and use Gaskacinch on both sides to seal the regular ports. Different products to the same end though.

I don't use RTV for water, but yeah.

same as mentioned above, sealant around the water ports. when i do the front and back with RTV i let it sit for a while and skin. this way when i set the manifold down and wiggle it around it doesnt all squeeze out and leave thin spots.

The Permatex #2 Glenn mentioned is real good stuff. I simply wipe a little of the same RTV I made the beads on the front and back of the lifter valley because, invariably, I got a lot of extra mess of the stuff from the caulking gun to use anyway. The Gaskacinch would do the same thing.

Word of note about not using the rubber end gaskets. A LOT of aftermarket intake manifolds won't even fit on the engine when trying to use them. The Weiand Tunnel for the 460 being one, the BDS and Blue Thunder blower manifolds being another. Had an issue with the Torker on my Olds with that also. Just good practice to eliminate them altogether.

Barry's (obnoxious001) has a good article over on PB installing a blower manifold you might want to take a peek at. Manny install is on page 2

Dave, use about a 1/4" bead across the front and rear on the block and give a little extra at the seam for the cylinder heads, put a little sealant around the water ports and install the gaskets on the heads, let is set up for a few minutes and install the manifold.

When installing the manifold you need to be standing over the engine and set the manifold down as straight as possible. You won't be able to move it around much without messing up the end sealant.

I hate that permatex #2 brown crap. I can't think of an application any more where it would be useful.

Use Ultra Black or Ultra grey, put a bead across the front and back of the block, then put a VERY light coat on the manifold and head around the water passages. I generally throw a glop or 3 somewhere on the head (away from the ports) to stick the gaskets too just because I've already got the tube in my hand and it helps keep the gaskets in place during assembly. Drop the manifold straight on, start all the bolts, then tighten evenly starting at the middle and working your way side to side and towards the ends of the block. Wipe the excess RTV off the ends if you feel like it.

X2 except I use " the right stuff". I used to use ultra black until I found this "stuff", it's bitchen. Only drawback is, it is way expensive.

That's the way I still do it,, don't fix what isn't broken. Note that the Permatex I use is the aviation grade stuff. I don't necessarily agree at all with letting the silicone ends skin, since it means it may not adhere well to the manifold,, I don't care for leaks!

hey i do realize these are boats but have any of you tryed yamaha bond. its the best ive ever used! hands down. it is very expensive but worth it.
