remote oil drain kit....
« on: September 20, 2010, 04:55:41 PM »
Ok. So ibuy a long drain hose kit for my bbc so I can drain the oil out the transom port by snaking it out the hole. The kit comes with about 3 feet of hose and a banjo style bolt ancd two washers. .no instructions. From napa.  Question... does a washer go on both sides of the banjo style fitting? What torque to secure it? I have read elsewhere these come loose an.d drain your oil while you drivde.  That would be a bad deal eh?

Been selling these for years and never had one fail (leak) suspect the Banjo takes a gasket on eith side of the pan fitting and "snug" should be adequate  Tom

One gasket on each side of the banjo and use some blue loctite on the threads. I prefer the flare type delio because they drain faster...

Tie the end of hose "up high" and you wont have any problems.. I normally drill a small hole on the cap and use a mini key ring and a shower curtain clip to keep it tied...

Zip ties work good too   :-\

Thanks. I feel better about using it now that you two chimed in.    It appears to be a good quality kit, and it does come with a fitting that is attached to a large circlip to keep the end of the hose up high.   Thanks for all the tech support here and when I call.

why is it neccesary for the end to be clipped up high.doesnt it cap off ? seems better to just lay in a roll in the boat out of the way, just curious as im looking to buy one.

In case the cap was to leak...If it is up as high as the valve covers if possible it is less likely too leak is the reason.

ok,that makes sense.just thought if it was capped rt it would be ok laying in the boat since it doesnt have pressure, but that does make sense.im new and just learning, thanks for clearing that up though.

You have never seen me drive   :o ..........that hose could get caught up in the belt, flywheel or worse, the metal cap and fitting could short something out electrically... :sly:

Things are not always a simple as they look.  ;)
