Title: BBF head I.D.
Post by: GlassCutter on June 06, 2016, 12:16:34 PM
I have a set of Ford DZVE AA heads.  Opinions on how well these will work for a build looking around a 500 hp 460 is what I am looking for.  How about if I decided to go big and build a 600+ stroker motor?    How well do they respond to light porting?  Looking for a bottom end monster tug boat, not a race boat.

Sounds like might be D2VE those are the worst bbf heads to have.

Your best bet is going to be a set of c8ve-e or c9ve-e or dove-c heads.

Ford seems to have so many different heads, I never know which is what.   I guess I will keep looking.  This has already been a 3 year engine build that I expect will go on for another 3 or 4.    Hell I gotta find a boat to put it in too.

D2VE-AA heads are single year open chamber heads.  While they are a decent cylinder head, they are not well suited for high compression builds where pump gas is the intended fuel.  You are better off getting a closed chamber head such as those noted above in this thread.

The factory iron passenger car heads have supported well over 700 hp in naturally aspirated engines, but there are better suited aftermarket cylinder head options for a 600+ inch engine that will run 5000+ rpm sustained.  Are you sure you need a 600 inch engine? That will require an aftermarket block and everything that goes into it (or onto it); a 557 (or smaller) can be built for a lot less and still make more power than most people need.

Paul thanks for the reply, but I didn't mean 600 inches.  I meant to say 600 ponies.  When I said stroker I meant something in the 500-540 cu. in. range.  I don't really know Ford combo's that well.  It seems a 513 seems to be popular.   I already have a stout shortblock 460 that is just short one piston, but I can't get any real info on compression or bore size as it is in storage out of state at the moment.  I got some heads in a seperate deal on the cheap when the machine shop condemned my first set for multiple cracks.  This project got put on the back burner some years ago, but now I am thinking about putting it together if for no other reason than to sell it and free up some space in a buddy's garage.

600+/- hp is pretty easy with D0VE heads on a 500-ish inch stroker.  I have both the D0VE heads and offset stroked crankshafts over here.  Call directly if interested.

P.S.: Getting an 8th piston for your current short block may be another sensible option once it is known what those pistons are.
