What weight oil

What weight oil should I run in my big block?  I used to run vr1 50 weight in my last boat. Not sure if that is a good idea.

My only recommendation with running a 50w oil is to build some heat before you really get on it. 

I've been using 15/w40 Delo for years without an oil related problem.

Most of you guys are after that elusive top 10 and beyond. But I'm going to stick with what the engine builder broke my motor inn on. Valvoline 20-50. I really can't afford to rebuild my engine every year like you guys do.

I will definitely let it warm up good. I never used to let it warm up much.

I use to always run castrol 20/50, but i noticed on long runs or after beating the crap out of my pile i got alot of oil pressure fluctuation. That all went away when i switched to the vr1 50..

In my first boat I really didn't do anything right. I put gauges in it but never hooked them up. So I never knew what the oil pressure was or water temp. Pretty dumb on my part!  That's why I'm asking so many questions this time around I want to make sure I can get it right. While still on a budget.

The gauge thing-
If it had oil pressure before, It'll have oil pressure again. Most don't watch oil press enough to avoid a problem. Usually when there is a problem, the crank is fried, even with a gauge.

Water temp-
I can reach the water outlet on top of the intake from the drivers seat. If you can lay your hand there indefinitely, its at 140* or less (comparable to black paint in the hot sun.)
Above 150*, your hand gets uncomfortable quick, and 180* is really hot to the touch. Gauge not required. 8)

Volt gauge-
Well, if it was checked with a meter and charging, it'll be OK out on the lake/river.

As far as oil, what are the engine specs?
Usually they're unknown. If it is a flat tappet cam, Delo 400 15/40 LE has ~1300 ppm zddp. Higher than most off the shelf motor oils.
yes its recommended for diesel AND gas engines. Even with a roller cam, I run Delo 400 in both the boats.

Good to know. So I wasn't the only one touching that semi warm water. This engine the guy before me put a moon eyes water temp gauge right on the block and one in the dash
