Was heading back to put the boat on the trailer and noticed the oil pressure was really low, so i shut it off. Checked the wires to the sending unit and gauge and then fired it back up and it was at zero? What could have caused this? Oil pump driveshaft snapped, oil filter clogged, pickup fell off of oil pump? I pulled the filter off and it was completely full and put a mechanical gauge on the motor, started it up for about 2-3 seconds. no oil pressure. Boat has a 10qt pan on it, going to try a new filter and see if maybe the old one got plugged up somehow, but probably not my luck.

Could be just about anything...How was o/p prior to this ??
1. Gallery plugs?
2. Pump??
3.Who knows ??? Let us know what u find.... ::)

Oil pressure was good before, about 25-30 hot idle pressure and 75 at about 5k rpms. If its anything major i'm going to just pull the engine and rebuild it for next season with some lower compression pistons for a turbo setup. I'm going to try a new filter and if that doesnt help anything then i'll check the pump shaft
-
Good luck....Would not be suprised if it is the pump shaft :sly:
Run the heavy duty shaft,,ALWAYS! ;D

Pulled the dist out of the motor to check the pump shaft, it was ok. So i put a drill on the pump to run it and see what was going on, had flow out of the filter housing. Put new filter on, ran drill till i got alot of resistance. Still no pressure on gauge. So then i pulled the drivers side valve cover, all good there. Then to the passenger side valve cover, found a rocker loose and the pushrod sitting off to the side. Pulled the pushrod out, it was broken in half almost. So i pulled the intake manifold, found a lifter that jumped out of its bore, so i put it back in and primed the engine with the drill. I got 65 psi on the mechanical gauge. So i'm going to replace the pushrod and check the valve lash and put it back together. Guess i'll have to keep a closer eye on the engine revs :o

Congrats..Prob. Solved...I hope !

Man, I totally saw this coming while reading your initial post. ;D Usually occurs on newly built and/or over-revved 460s. The pushrod always has that "V" bent into it about 2/3 way up the pushrod, but sometimes it's just pretzeled.
If you saw the low oil pressure soon enough, you're probably good to go, but make sure that the loose lifter did not bounce around and rub against any cam lobes at the lifter valley vent holes.

When ever the oiling system is compromised ..you will loose oil press.
,makes no diff. what type of engine it is... It is a basic engineering fact.
IMHO. :)

Never heard of that happening before, learn something new every day! But I'm kinda new to Fords (And gonna go check the lash on mine later this morning....... :sly:)
RPM limiter BBFsouthwind ;)

I need to install a rev limiter thats for sure. But i noticed today that after the repair my oil pressure is lower at cruising speeds than it used to be but its still acceptable.
-
Unfortunately, you probably did some level of bearing damage. I would change the oil and filter after every trip for a bit.
I think the BBF, and Paul will correct me quick if I'm wrong, does not use a main priority oiling system. Relying on the restriction of oil to the top end through the lifter galley to provide oil to the mains/rods.
If the pressure is within acceptable levels, we're into Sept and near the end of the season. You can rip it down over the winter and rebearing it.

I'm going to change the oil and filter and run some lucas to try and band-aid it for the rest of the season. Its getting pretty cool here pretty quick so i dont have much time left. O0

Cut the oil filter open and look for bearing material in the pleating.
What was your oil pressure when at cold idle, and when warm idle & warm cruise?
