454 4 bolt +.060 aluminum heads.
What would the downfall be? This is for most purposes a drag boat. I would run it up to the sand bar, sit around til' dusk run it hard for a few passes, and then head in. I am thinking that the lower portions of the cylinders don't do much for cooling.
I am running a 6.135 rod (standard length not a long rod)
8-1 compression and not more than 20psi of boost. This could easily become an E85 fueled engine if there is a heat problem. The heads are aluminum. This would leave 1-1/2" of water in the top of the block, and of course the entire volume of the heads to cool.
I am trying to decide. I just can't see in my situation this being a big problem.

im retarded so take it for what its worth :o why do you want to hard block it? lot's of gn boats over 1k hp not hard blocked running for 20miles or so flat out.
so if you can explain to this retard why you want to hard block? block flex?

I are a retard as well, >:D and was thinking the same thing, Ralph. Your factory block should be plenty strong enough to take those numbers with no problem. Point of fact, friend of mine here locally is running a .060 over stroked BBC on E-85 at close to 40 PSI (twin turbo), 12:1 compression and runs it like we all run our pleasure boats. Been running for 2 years this way.
Strengthening a block by backfilling it is only something I've ever seen on top fuel cars/boats that are rebuilt after every 1/4 mile run/pass. Those guys are ALSO running well over 100 PSI of boost from 14-71 and bigger blowers at around 20:1 compression on Nitro-Methane on well engineered aftermarket blocks, twin magnetos and 2 plugs per cylinder because the first set burns off during the burnout process. These cars become, in effect, diesels after the launch, in reality. And the engine blocks are a structural part ofthe chassis.
In regard to the lower cylinders not doing much for cooling, my retarded ass begs to differ. The BULK of the heat comes from the lower part of the cylinders where the fire and force is at BDC, to be sure, but there is also this thing called heat transfer and expansion, and the fact a good portion of the heat in an engine actually comes from violent reaction of friction, not so much from the explosion and flame portion of the process. The very process that makes liquid cooling even work in the first place. If one part of a cylinder expands at a certain rate, and he lower portion does not, you have another major issue, to my thinking.

If you're trying to strenthen the block I think you would be better off installing a main stud girdle over filling the block.

Thanks to the three that aren't retards. My reasoning was that a stiffer block is always better, and if the lower portions of the cylinders are not transferring the lion's share of the heat then why not put some filler in it. Heat has never been an issue on the river for my boats, and I was thinking that I could take advantage of the excessive cooling and stiffen up the block at the same time.
The block does look great inside (no excessive pitting or rust pockets), and the core shift aspect looks great as well. However, I did not have it sonic checked..
I surely will never run as hard and for as long as the guys that you are talking about Ralph. And if I were planning to, I would not sacrifice the cooling.

Crewchief, what would the stud girdle do? Possibly eliminate any cap walk? I know that the 5.0 Ford blocks (especially the Mexican blocks) benefit from this, but I am not sure if one is even offered for the BBC. I was thinking that with the 6.135 rods that my weak link would be cylinder side loading and not over all block strength. Thanks for your thoughts.
Nick, this may be overkill but $25 in block fill is cheap over kill. I was just wondering how catastrophic the losses in coolability there would be. Yeah I said coolability!
I always thought that those top fuel engines ran aftermarket blocks that were solid and didn't use any filler. I had no idea that a blower could generate so much boost IRREBEL, I may scrap the turbo project and put the blower back on. Is this TT E85 496 guy on the boards? I would like to talk with him directly. Any contact info would be greatly appreciated. By my rough, uninformed, limited information on this engine, I am thinking that he would be generating 1800-2000hp WOW! I would love to catch him at Lost Lake some time.

But...for anything less than BIG boost or BIG nitrous I don't think it's necessary.
