Hey guys I just got my brand new edelbrock 75614 intake. I take it out of the box and immediately notice the different shape and size of one of the ports. Is this normal? It cant be...its the port on the right in the pic. You can see how much smaller it is when I line up the gasket

Most of my new intakes have been un even. I just gasket match it and port the opening to Match and sand the runners a bit to clean em up

Don’t grind the intake if you are not going to grind the heads to match. Ideally, the transition between the intake and the heads should be seamless. If not, it is better to have the mismatch step down into a larger port in the head from a smaller port in the intake. This also creates a little shearing affect that helps to re-atomize any fuel that has fallen out of suspension.
In my opinion, I think it is better to lay out the port locations rather than transfer the gasket pattern because you will find that the gaskets are often all over the place as well.

I bought an Edelbrock Torker II for a BBC. It wouldn't even sit flush on the heads. I had to grind 4 corners to clearance it. I also had bought an Edelbrock polished timing cover. It had the crank seal already installed when pulled it out of the packaging. When I fired up the motor, it threw oil all over my seats and carpet. So I removed the harmonic balancer, looking for the leak. I thought I had a leaking pan, or too much crankcase pressure. I removed the crank seaI from the timing cover, just in case, and discovered the seal was missing the metal spring inside of the seal. There was no way to inspect the seal before assembly as the covers' embossing hides the backside of the seal. I am very disappointed with Edelbrock. I paid top dollar for brand new parts. My expectation was to have quality parts with much better fit and finish. Two thumbs down from this guy.

Since I have failed to communicate some of my posts clearly, I do not want any confusion. Forgive me if I am talking below your level, I just don’t want a mistake and I feel this needs to be said.
In order to grind the ports in the heads, the heads need to be removed from the engine and fully disassembled. Then, they need to be thoroughly cleaned before reassembly. Any metal particles and/or grinding dust will destroy and an engine.
If your long block is already assembled, I would just put it together. Realistically at your horsepower level, you will not notice any difference by just port matching.

The port shape on the intake is a moving target... Ever look to see how inconsistent the heads are?
Did you buy this from Ebay or a reputable supply house? Those scratches and pits are post manufacture.

Sure glad you weren't there when we dropped a valve on the marathon boat, up until 2am grinding the gashes out of the piston and using a Shop-Vac to clean up, ran better than before the very next day and didn't quit until we shut it off at the end of the race...... 8)

Typically it would be an oval port manifold fun big rectangular port heads.
I have some interesting information from Don Terrell at seed talk, where one of the circle track head porters was experimenting with opening of the intake manifold .100 all around with an intentional mismatch. Then he tried the same thing with the heads.

Not knowing any better, with my peanut port heads, I thought they were 'rectangle' heads, and ordered a Vic Jr Air Gap from summit accordingly,
well...
lesson learned... and it works fairly well on oval port heads... 4900 r's with an A2 AT... use what ya got!!!

Thanks for all the info guys! I ended up putting the intake on w/o porting anything. I bought the intake from Jegs. I even called Edelbrock and told them about all the scratches on pitting on the machined surfaces. They told me the small port is normal and so were the scratches and pitting.
It surprising that a $450 intake was be that thrashed right out of the box. I think someone has used the intake before but whatever. We'll see what happens when I fire it up next week.

The different sized ports were a attempt to keep the fuel/air charge velocity the same between the different length intake runners.
