Well there's water in the cylinders!

Took our advantage out last weekend and didn't even make it out of jack Smith before the thing pegged the temp gauge! Shredded impeller that was supposedly changed by a shop a couple months ago caused this. Didn't even last 2 trips!

Anyways on to my question. If there is water in the cylinders and it didn't ce!from the manifolds or a blown head gasket where else can it come from? This is a gen 5 BBC 502 crate motor by the way. Intake manifold gasket possibly?

I've got some of it apart. Gonna pull the heads in a little to see the gasket and check the cylinders.

Got the heads off and my mind is boggled! All the cylinders where full of water. None of the gaskets looked bad or blown out in a spot. There is even rust on some of the intake runners. Not all only some. The exhaust manifolds where full of water also. It's like someone dumped a gallon of water in the motor. Does any one have an idea of how it would have got in and from where?

What kind of exhaust? Maybe came up through the exhaust manifolds if they are logs. Happened to me before when I had the exhaust flappers go bad.

No. Once i noticed it was hot i shut it down. when i went to start it after it cooled it wouldn't turn over so i pulled the plugs and then found the cylinders where full of water. I think we figured out what happened though. when it cooled down water came in through the exhaust filling the motor. never seen this happen before but i guess it does.

yes thats exactly what happened. not logs though. they are dana marine aluminum manifolds. I've never seen or heard of that until i talk to a few people that have experienced the same thing. good thing is after cleaning everything i think we will be ok with new gaskets and put it back together. no water in the oil or lifter valley. still gonna change it though.

It's called "pickling"...


The impeller could have failed for several reasons, Run dry, improperly installed, picked up a plastic bag, they never actually changed it etc....

Anyway, when the engine got hot and shut off, the steam collapsed and sucked water in through the exhaust... Silly common.

You need to inspect the exhaust hoses and flapper valves, get every single piece of the old impeller out, check the oil cooler and thermostat housing, everything, that rubber will be everywhere.

Clean it up, new gaskets, put it back together, it's likely fine... For comfort sake, have the heads mag checked my a machine shop...

Thanks for the info! Never experienced this before. Ive already taken all waterlines off and flushed everything. Unfortunately   we store the boat at our house in bullhead so i will be going back this weekend to sweat my balls off and remove the other head. definetly gonna have them checked and clean all the rust off the valves and ports. Ill post back when i get it put back together. hopefully all is good.
As for the impeller that was changed idk what they did cause I've never had one go out in two trips. usually last 2 years! we got hosed at that place anyways. Never going back.
