Title: Budget 460
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on December 22, 2007, 10:20:35 PM
I aquired a motor from skip a few weeks ago and not sure what I am going to do with it just yet. Since money is tight.....i figured i would do a budget 460 project with it.

My goals:

The cash counter is set to zero....and only goes up based on money i spend from here on out, it does not include parts i currently own or that have been donated, only out of pocket expenses related to the motor itself.

I am not a mechanic by any means, so that means i have no idea what i am doing. Only 460 experience I have is with my previous motor. So that being said, any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated.

The motor: $100 + 2 SCJB Shirts

This is a D9TE-AB block. Skip only gave me a little info when I picked it up. He said it came out of a flat bed pickup that was out on a ranch and was used to haul hay around. The truck was totaled when it hit a pole, but the motor was still running. I have no idea what the heads are...there are no markings anywhere other then a ford logo by the valve springs.

I have two pair of BBF heads like those one is a D3 and the other is a D4.

nope....there is holes in both sides and the bottoms....one side of the rails is trashed...and the windage tray is destroyed...

That is too bad. I have destroied my pan a bunch and it seen we can always fix it, using parts from stock pans and some small plates. How much do you want for it ? Lucky stiff has 7 .030 TRW L-2404s and a set of 7 cj/truck rods.

Brad, if you really want to install that high mileage engine which has bearing clearances possibly as little as 0.0008" (that's right less than 1 thou, and no I'm not kidding), and then spin it at a sustained 5000 rpm...then don't complain if you end up with a second grenaded engine on your hands.  No saying it will absolutely happen, but it very well may happen.

We will accept your non-disassembled longblock as a core trade-in toward a fully rebuilt jet boat applicable 466-472 pump gas frinedly 400hp-550hp engine, should you have a financial windfall this christmas.  ;)

LO

p.s.: Any questions during your current build, feel free to ask,as always.

...then don't complain if you end up with a second grenaded engine on your hands.

thanks for the offer paul, but its just not realistic to come up with that much money in 2 months.....so im going to run with what i got and have fun with it....if it dies on the water....oh well, i got out there and did something rather then sitting on the shore counting my pennies.

again, i want to state this is for fun...im not looking to unleash ass whoopings with it....i just want to get back out on the water while i save up money for a built motor.  ;)

I like your attitude Brad!  Get to the lake anyway you can, and if you go to the river just remember to always go upstream.

If it has high mileage the clearances should be a little more  no?
Title: Re: Budget 460

On one of my builds (granted for a car but hey), I pulled the 250K+ miles 440 engine out of the 72 Imperial, changed the rings and bearings, new oil, threw a 200 shot on it and raced it and used it as a tow vehicle for 10 years. Sure there is a little piston slap on really cold mornings, but it runs just fine thank you.....

The factory stuff is more durable than people give it credit for. Those cast pistons are doing fine...

Hey what are the options?

Boat with no motor, waiting for one -
or
Boat with a slap together motor, that may surprise you and actually run? Worse case you are sitting at #1 again.

Sounds like a no brainer. Of course, if you really get desparate, I still have another Mopar BB sitting in the garage...they tend to keep on running (though I've done the same thing that you did)...

For xtra protection, if it were me, I'd run a quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1. Hammer down!!

Brad, while you have the pan off check the main/thrust bearing for damage.  If the truck was totaled with a severe front end collision the weight of the crank can damage the thrust (more common in big diesel trucks but not hard to check at this point)

Your eyes do not decieve you. shot peened and polished LY's

As I once said " if you aren't breaking parts, you aren't trying hard enough!"

That was an 8500 RPM 440 with a big solid roller, tunnel ram and a 300 shot.

Lasted for 15 years - strangely enough broke (well fully broke) at idle not on the pass I had made just 10 minutes before. Lucked out on that one.

Well then, under those circumstances I'd say it held up better than anyone could expect.  8) Good. Nice to hear, as they are usable in a 460 stroker of sorts (baby stroker). The 440 rod may be on the heavy side for a stock rod, but they are quite strong...and most strong aftermarket steel rods have some mass to themselves anyway.

Thx,

There is the 6 pac rod and then the LY - LY's are prefered by me as they are beefy but not overly heavy like the 6pacs.
