OTH gate valve

Hey all. I’m getting my 73 Rogers back in the water after a blown head gasket repair. I replaced my Bassett tee and am looking for a quick bit of advice as to how far I should open the gate valve that I have controlling water to the headers. I understand I should have no water at idol and then the tee should open around 2500 rpm? If that happens with the valve a half turn open then I assume I should be good?? Thanks for any advice.

Just to be sure, you have a gate valve in between the motor and the Bassett tee?
Usually, the tee valve should be able to control all this by itself. A fine mist is ok at idle. Just no raw water dribbling out. You can have it come in sooner than 2500. All motors are different. I think a half a turn on the gate valve will be too little. It shouldn’t be a problem if you start there. Just be ready to start making adjustments.
Did you take apart your old one? Sometimes the spring breaks or gets rusted open. The spring is directional. Sometimes it can be put in backwards.

Yes the gate valve is between the thermostat housing and the tee. I did not take the old one apart. Just wanted to start fresh since I have no idea how old it was. I was hoping the tee would handle it all but wanted to make sure. Trying to just get as much info as possible. Seems like it’s just a matter of tuning it in and they are all a bit different. As I understand it I shouldn’t have any water at idle or very little. Also when is water coming out of the weep holes normal? Only at shut down??

OK today engine ran fantastic!!!!! This water in the headers thing is killing me. So I start it up with my gate valve 1 turn open. I'm idling just around 1k, I have a pretty heavy cam, and the headers are getting a mist out of them. I turn the valve to half and I'm still getting water (mist) out of the headers. Not blowing through the weep holes just a nice mist coming out. I run it around 3-4 K and really nice steam out of the headers and nothing out the weep holes. Is this anything to worry about or should I just run it???

While this was happening and you were making adjustments, what was the temps at?

Boat temp was right around 140-150. Gate valve from the pump is open basically 2 turns. I have a gate valve off the pump,
to the block, off the thermo housing one line dumps straight out the transom, the other has an inline gate valve before getting to the header tee.

Your second valve off the block is on the wrong line. Should be on tour dump line. Gate valve off the pump is essentially a safety in case ur water lines break , clamp fail etc. and should be wide open. The gate valve off your block on the dump line is to regulate flow and try to control temp. The Bassett tee if working correctly should be normally closed at idle. It will open once there’s more pressure to overcome spring pressure. If you are fighting milky oil you can always run a line to the drivers seat with a ball valve and back to the tee to control the water manually.

Thanks to all for the reply’s. Made some adjustments yesterday and everything ran great. No water at idle and tee worked good to control water to headers. Water pressure stayed around 12 lbs. engine temp was good. Oil pressure good. No water in oil. Hope it stays this way. Definitely more fun
