496big block Chevy new build too much crush on Cam bearings so cam won't go past the number two and three journals. Ready to pull my hair out if I had any. Machinist has no answer or solutions. Has anyone ever had a similar problem. Already have a ton of money in machine work in this block. Isn't the cam or wrong bearings in wrong journals

Bearings either defective or installed out of sequence.
Had you had a cam in it before?

What do the cam journals measure?
Sure sounds like the bearings were installed in reverse.
Pull the plug and see if you can install it backwards.

Flip the cam around and see if the gear end journal fits in the first bearing.

Tried all of the above it seems to be crushing the bearing too much. I've never had this block running before bought

Machinist says they are out of round like a bearing has previously spun

Which way? The bore is out if round?
That's part of checking a block before building. No disrespect to your machinist.

The only other thing I have seen is the proper bearing installed in the correct location but the installer was a animal and distorted them on install. My ex boss did it on almost every block......

Or there is a burr in the block

I had a machine shop install cam bearings crooked before.. Cam went half way in and stopped. Had them reinstalled and the cam slid right in.. Just a thought..

Big block chevy doesn't matter which way you try to put the cam in since the journals are all the same size... it's the od of the bearing that is different. 2&5 one size... 3&4 another... and 1 the largest yet.

I was referring to the back of the block. Not knowing what block it was, it could had been straight bored. My 410 is this way, as was my old Rodeck block. Sort of made us think we were losing it.
Could not get two bearings in to save our life. The others went in, one with a fight.
Don't know how this could be, just grasping. Soft bearings would go. Even in the wrong hole. Only one would "fall through" if memory serves.

It's taken me two years since I lost Rhonda to get enough enthusiasm to build this motor and to have this machinist not to have checked this before he returned the block is a bit of a set back. I had the crank in and one piston was about to do some clearance checks and degree the cam. Idk if this thing is meant to be. I'm going to have Barry (obnoxious) from another site take a look at it since he's just down the road in Parker. If it's not fixable might be the straw that breaks the camels back. I've all this shit sitting around for two years and got all the parts to replace the Chinese crap the previous owner had lied about. Thought I was on my way now this. Oh well just rambling now. Thanks for all the help I'll let you all know what I find.

Well, it's story time brother......
Way back when, I built what was probably the fifth engine I ever had my hands on and did 100% myself.
I have never been well off, I've worked my fingers to the bone for everything I've ever had. Nobody in my family has what I call money, never mind F-you money.
So I built this LS7 with all the best parts, everything in it was top shelf.
Balanced, tricked out crank, forged pistons, good rods, I ate Ramen for two months for this deal.....
Anyway, I put the engine in my truck, a '78 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 that I traded a perfectly good running GMC extra cab S15 for....
Anyway, This truck was lifted, had 38" tires, 4.56 gears, the works.
So when I finally got it running, I was driving it home for the first time and it dropped a valve, basically a failed rotator.
Shit.......... I'm talking 5 miles or less.
So I had a set of heads from the boat on the shelf that I knew had good valves. So that night, I swapped the heads after cleaning up the valve dings in the piston.
Well, long story short, this thing ran HARD....... The next weekend was the local truck pulls. I entered the truck and on the second pull, broke the input shaft to the four speed and revved the engine to the sky scattering the bottom end.
I was devastated. Not to mention totally broke.
Point? I had the truck running a week later after a buddy helped me get a good core back together on the cheap.
That engine ran for the rest of the time I owned it and until the dude that bought it from me rolled it.
Moral of the story, giving up isn't my style. Honestly, I don't think it's yours either...
I probably have a dozen stories similar to that, it's mechanical stuff. Frustration is part of the game.
Take a breath, take a step back and approach it from a different angle and likely the problem will present itself.
When it does, there's no better drug on the planet. You will feel good about persisting and know that you won.
If you were closer, I'd be there with you scratching my head right next to you.
You got this bud.
It's great to see you here. I honestly don't know what else to say.
Looking down the road, this is a learning experience, you just failed the quiz, the test isn't for a few more weeks.
Much love bro.

Ok this is the plan.
Since the block was real rusty and I think the bearings were out when he cleaned in in his machine. Thinking it might of been a contributing factor. So I'm going to try a light hone job on journals with a bead hone coupled with polishing the cam. Hopefully that will do it otherwise wise machining it for needle bearings. Not giving up the beast will run one way or another!!
