GEN 6 roller cam in 502 GEN 5 engine?
« on: July 18, 2016, 08:22:05 AM »
O.k. I have my eyes on a Gen 5, 502 engine  I want to build for a future jet boat. So I have this Big Block Power-Marine Performance book I have been reading.  I am reading the differences, and the Gen 4 and Gen 5 share the same upper valley area(i.e. cam lifter bores and such), but they do not share the same lower end. Gen 5 = one piece rear main, taller main caps, different cranks (throw weights are different), different flexplate, yadda yadda. But what the book states was interesting to me. It states to put a roller gen 6 cam in a Gen 5 block and use the upper timing set from a GEN 6 and use the factory thrust plate set up. This eliminates the need for a thrust button set up on the end of the cam to timing  cover for the camshaft end play. My last engine I built was a Gen 4 and a Comp cams jet boat roller cam. I set the thrust at .008”. It still looks like I would need to buy the link bar roller lifters anyway, so I am really not seeing an advantage of a GEN 6 roller cam in a Gen 5 engine.

mash on it

TJ-

I went the other way, Kinda.

Gen V block. Had #8 piston grenade and windowed the block. The block was set up for roller lifters, and dogbones, and no fuel pump boss, either. BUT it was a flat tappet cam. Factory from 1995 or so. Indmar Marine, I think.

Located a block. It was a Gen VI (6) (1998?). I used the same crank. It too was set up for roller cam. I used a Comp cams flat tappet cam (for a Mk IV) and double roller timing chain. The Gen VI timing cover has 6 bolts and a spaghetti gasket, and I used a GM factory piece, its cast aluminum.

I had to 'Clearance' the inside ribs on the T/C for the timing chain, and make a plate to block off the crank position sensor, and notched the 4 pt front mount as well. A cam button was not used. I don't know the limit on lobe lift for dogbones, But I bet you'll find out. I know .540" valve lift is a crate motor. .632" Hyd Roller in a ZZ572/620hp, but its a tall deck, and no clue as to what lifter style it uses- link or dogbones.
