- When re-balancing the camshaft, be sure to split the mallory metal's total mass between two pieces placed betwen cam journals 1&2 and 4&5.
- Timing chain lightening mods are not completed unless the cam gear and crank gear are also rebalanced 2-to-1 against each other (since the cam gear turns at half the crank gear speed).
- Installing seal lip springs from the next size greater seal are a great friction reduction trick. Remember to crazy-glue that larger lip spring into place, or else.
- Be sure to pre-torque connecting rod bolts on a "rod simulator spacer sleeve" prior to weight matching all 16 of 'em to each other; otherwise the total mass will be thrown off if only finger-tight (bolt preload affects total mass due to energy stored)
- Matching the cc's on your carburetor float bowl volumes is the most overlooked step when fully optimizing air/fuel delivery.
- Tapping vaccum gauges perpendicularly into the 4-inch collectors of OT headers will allow precision tuning of exhaust pulses by playing with valve timing events via lash settings (flat tappet and solid lifter only).

My point is that "customers" don't even want to spend the money
on balancing the rot/recip....In which case . ,I have no choice
but to send them to the local engine butcher shop.
It's all about educating the Customer. :)
Then again...People make their own mind up. ;)

I find my "customers" very smart and very much on the ball , more so than ever in todays world where an incredible amount of information is readily avaiable "at thier finger tips" I "learn" from my customers regularly Tom

OK I read this and think I get the concept. BUT on a HP/$$ ratio is this really money well spent? As far as I know, not too many engines have ever been lost due to a cam shaking itself apart. I imagine this job is a hundred bucks or more and like the article says, you still have an entire valvetrain assembly that is probably made to less consistent standards than most quality camshafts. I would surely have to have someone like Tom or EngDoc explain why I must have this done.

Honestly ponder this, most jet boat motors we know and love are going to spin around 5k WOT (maybe 6K under some circumstances) ,then consider that what the cam is turning (rpm) not to mention the very small circle of rotating "mass" then ask yourself if it would really make any real sense to give a second thought (or spend $) on balancing a precision made production popular brand camshaft like Comp, Engle, Isky ,Lunatti, Crane etc ,etc :screwy:

Uhh...well...it made for some interesting reading.
Anyone one else here every put a cam on a lathe, on the cam's centers, so as to polish the journals and, during the process, take note of the affect of the cam being out of balance? ;) And this is without the 5 cam bearings supporting the juornals accross the camshaft.
I could see Formula 1 working with this....

p.s.: I like to look for every IOTA of hp too, so I won't dispute the theory or reasoning but...

Why couldn't you just go with a more aggressive cam lobe to increase power instead of balancing? LOL >:D

Because the more aggressive lobe will make the cam even more out of balance ;D

Great question Tahit Girl...But in my opinion,rather than balancing the cam,
consider simply finding the correct engine parts combination to suit your needs
and balance the rot/recip. weights which is definately $ well spent opossed to cam balancing.
Course I am not against this process, but If you max your rpm's at 6,500 or so
I dont see the need for cam balancing... Any ways did you enjoy the fireplace last night
and my hand keeping your transom warm ???

If you're considering spending the money to have a cam balanced, I thing you would be ahead by using that money to have someone spend more time doing port work to the cylinder heads!

For my own personal builds up to this point, I think I'd rather spend that "camshaft balancing money" where it is better put to use, such as weight matching my testicles so that my ball sack hangs symmetrically.
