Can't find replacement mechanical fuel pump for 460
« on: October 04, 2021, 08:22:01 AM »
I have a mechanical carter 0-2208 fuel pump but seems to be weak (almost 40 years old at this point) for a ford 7.5L (460).

I am looking for a marine rated replacement one but I can't find one.

Holley used to make 712-460-11/13 ones but they arent made anymore.
Some people on mer-cruiser said a Airtex 60932 would work but arent made anymore either.

The pump needs the dump valve to the air/flame arrestor as my engine is enclosed for safety purposes. Holley marine rated is 12-460-11 but not made for enclosed engine spaces as it doesn't have the dump value if the diaphragm ruptures.

I can't find rebuild kits either for it.

I contacted Carter and tech said carter M6696 was the replacement one for Carter 0-2208 but not sure if the cam lever is compatible with the ford 460 as the specs only show supporting up for a Ford 5.8L. They said their engineers would check and validate it to see if is compatible with a ford 460.

I don't really want to go electric.

Out of stock on the clay Smith and I didn't see if it fit a 460 or not, plus I think you need a regulator also which is way over kill for me.

I called summit but they don't sell the holley marine one rated for enclosed spaces anymore. Waiting for feedback on the if the Carter one will work.

Agree with Brad on the clay smith. A nice U.S. made pump that’s fully rebuildable.

Yes, does require a dead head regulator which is fairly simple to set up.

So I got in touch with Carter again and further down the rabbit hole with them. They don't make 0-2208 pump anymore nor do they make a replacement for it anymore. They did recommend me a company that makes rebuild kits called Then and Now Automotive. A quick call and the friendly man told me the rebuild kit is CK-137 for any future readers.

https://www.then-now-auto.com/product/ck-137-carter-fuel-pump-kit/ for around $75 shipped.

Holley doesn't make a marine rated one anymore with the dump tube which would be part number: 712-460-11/13. If you don't need a fuel pump for enclosed area you can get the Holley marine 12-460-11/13, again these are not rated for enclosed hatches and don't have the dump tube to the carb/air box in-case the diaphragm ruptures. The -13 requires a regulator, the -11 do not.

Clay smith makes a Ford mechanical fuel pump though I see no where listed that mentions they are USCG approved for enclosed hatch/bilge environments. Will also need a regulator for these. ~$260 total

Last CP performance sells a marine big block ford fuel pump with regulator combo that has the fuel dump valve. ~$260.

The airtex 60392 I referenced, seems to be for mercruiser only. Still not sure if it would fit or not.

I was able to rebuild it with a kit from "Then and Now Automotive". My diaphragm was really cracked, matter of time before it actually ruptured and caused an issue. $60 fix.

Fuel pressure is now stable.
