Title: Carb Scoops
Post by: GAWnCA on January 21, 2008, 10:55:38 AM
I've got a dumb question.  Wouldn't the butterflies on on a carb scoop like in this photo tend to work as a choke?

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fgregaw.home.comcast.net%2F%7Egregaw%2Fcarb%2520scoop.jpg&hash=90520e0d3d5a664f275cb752a1c54d7844e934ff)

Or is there enough air flow around everything else that it's just good for looks?

only way that scoop would look good is if it were on the bottom of the lake :D

Not everyone wants a 40 gallon shop vac sitting on top of their motor.   >:D

I agree that the scoop should never see the light of day, but in response to the question, no I don't think it would be good as a choke method, too much air behind the butterflies, and I'd be willing to bet that it doesn't seal 100% to the carb base, but I don't know much so take that at face value.

It will leak plenty at idle to run , but it also comes with a linkage to open the butterflies with throttle opening.

Thanks Skip, at least you admit you don't know.  LMAO!!!  That's more than the others could come up with or admit to.  I guess everyone thinks those big honking hood scoops that make the intake of a 747 look small are the only way to go.  Then you have to bolt them down to keep them from blowing your motor out of the hull.  :D :D :D

i happen to like the looks as well, i just don't run the "butterflies" in it,  i put them back in for end of the season storage and take them out to go to the lake, only takes a couple minutes.

I like it. Just looks more racey to me. My favorite is the slash cut dual scoop, but these have enough air to flow around on idle. Sometimes the linkage can be tricky though.

Maybe you can duct tape some 5 gallon buckets together and make that work.  I always laugh when I see these race boats that have a bigger intake scoop than motor under it to breath in all that air.  LMAO!!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Here's what I'm talking about...

See you could hide a big outboard under that thing!!!

Those big scoops will provide a bit of positive pressure, and can actually increase performance some - assuming they don't take in water. Water doesn't burn too well.

Reminds me - last week I saw the old car that had a small block chevy in it. No issue, right? Well the spark plug wires went straight down the center of the valve covers, just like a HEMI.  Undercloser inspection I realized that this SB had a valve cover that was two piece - the one that actually held the oil in, and one that bolted to it, complete with a front of the engine drop down plate, that sure made it look like a 392 MOPAR HEMI....

How about this one. This is a BDS bugcatcher one that they converted for EFI. It has the center plate only acting as as throttle body. The outer 2 butterflys are blocked off. I machined the lower plate and I also will machine holes for injectors as well as the fuel rails.

That one on that car has a BDS plate machined for 16 injectors. That allows you to run lower Lb/Hr injectors (i.e high impedence stock ECM stuff). The BDS stuff is very high $$. As for 3 butterflys being open I bet the driveablility is not that good. I am running a 461 BBC roller cam, Brodix heads..etc. I am sticking with 8 injectors and running the Thruster EFI system and low impedence injectors. The 16 hole plate was developed many years ago and at that time they did not have higher flowing injectors as are available today. Sorry for the highjack.

The bases that come with those scoops leak a lot of air and because of that the scoop wouldn't work for a choke effect. I think they're bitchin, but it's totaly a IMO kind of thing. I've seen a lot of scoops I hate that other's like and vice versa, etc...

It seems a common opinion is that those fake "fuel injected" scoops shoulnd't be used except for an anchor because they are "fake".

I'm wondering what is less "fake" on these trick bad asssed new modern fuel injection systems some guys are stuffing into the "fake" scoops. They aren't the real thing either so it must be about how much you spend on the "fake" set-up that makes it cool...  ???  ... because I've only seen maybe 5 people on this board that actually have the "real thing".

I think it's complete crap and ball-less to trash other people's sh!t on the web.   :o  I also think it's complete crap and ball-less to trash other peoples sh!t when you got the same thing sitting in your garage.

I think only cars should have velocity stacks, although flames shooting out of them do look really cool.

I don't know who actually made them but those old school Nicson ( ?? )  scoops are bitchin on the right boat. One problem with them is you can't run them on three dueces because most dueces are two barrels (duece = two) and have different air cleaner base diameter's.   :D

I gotta go, I'm late on taking my meds...   :P

I'm selling it.  :'(  I need some cash. But I do have an idea of what scoop I'm going to run when and if I ever get a engine in my boat.  :-\  When I get that scoop made, I'll send it to you for some apprentice air brushing.

Stick that sucker on a rod Rod. it's a way cool scoop!!!! In a retro type set up it would tits!

Yea I wanted to put it on my '32 Ford pickup. I'll get another one when the time is right.

marcsrollin hates  2 out of the 3 of my scoops/air cleaners.  :D  The one posted above and the old school circle race boat scoop that I sold with a boat, regretted selling, and then paid a little too much for to get it back.   :P  (i.e: "the scoop that needs a red flag on it's side and then needs to be mounted on a post", I can't stop laughing from that one!)

Hilborn just may still make that hat. I looked on their site and found the old four port still available, the upright four port injector w/ the big round scoop like i have on these carbs, very cool gasser stuff....Also, American still makes the old mags, except you can get 'em in modern sizes. I'm putting 18's and twenty's on my '56 Chevy.

Not exactly the way I remember it but I've had a bump or two on my head so that could have been the way it happened. But somehow I think there were more sentences in between the sentences you typed. But I could be wrong. If that is exactly how it went down then I'm just waiting for you to finish it.  :-X

hey heres mine and i will take some of that action 2savage is thrown down

Kind of hard to tell but I think that's it!   :o   Imagine putting a red mail box flag on it and if it looks right that's probably it. I dig that phockin scoop and I paid either $150 or $250 to get it back in my hands. I met a guy that paid a shop $450 to have one made.

That old school Cal Custom scoop screams T-Bucket.
