Title: Chevy small block question.

I'll start by saying this is my first jet and I'm very green to the whole boat scene. I have mechanical background with bikes though so here it goes.

I have a small block Chevy from a 99-2000 corvette(5.7). I took her out and idled around for about an hour due to some speed regulations that day but towards the end of my hour I got to open her all the way up and she pulled up no problem but after about 10 seconds of full throttle she lost power and sputtered then the boat died.  Started her back up and she ran ok for a second then some black smoke came out the back and I turned her off, waited a few min and tried again but she wouldn't stay on.  Checked the fuel and she had plenty.  It is fuel injected if that helps.   

Sorry for the rambling but I'm in some serious need of some advice, Thank you in advance

This brings up several questions before we get to the cause of the problem.

I'm guessing you recently acquired this boat?
Do you have any history with this boat?
Has it ever run properly with its current set up?
Have you changed anything since you've had it?
What system does it have to operate the fuel injection?

I agree with crewchief22.

Need more information or at least some pictures of how it's set up.

You can't just throw an injected automotive motor on a boat without a lot of forethought and modification.

It also takes a special computer or a heavily modified one,  to run really well.

Thank you for the response, I did just pick up the boat about a week before I took it out.  The previous owner said he ran it about a month before I purchased the boat.  I don't have any background on the boat and the previous owner wasn't very knowledgeable.  I do have some pics I'll include and can take more if needed.  (Just one of the engine but it's not great ).

Actually I really wanted to switch it to carbureted if you could give me some advice on what I'll actually need.   Thanks!

That 350 looks to a late 80's TBI motor. Mercruiser used the TBI motor a while longer- mid 90's? Glenn would know.

there is some Iffy rigging on that motor.

Black smoke=Rich condition.

The rest of what you described sounds like a fuel supply problem, lean or lack thereof.

Does it have a map sensor? O2 sensors? Check/change the fuel filter(s).

How is the QUALITY of the fuel? Old? Fresh? (I drained out 40 gals of gas/diesel in a guys boat once)

Mash pretty spot on with a local shop I was picking the techs brain also, I'll be checking the fuel filters and fuel pump and go from there.   Thank you all for the replays I know I don't have much  info for you all to go off
