We took our boat out yesterday for the first time with the new engine. The temp was hovering at 180 and at times 190 degrees. These manifolds are the long bolt logs.
I figure the lake is going to warm up another 5-10 degrees by summer so I'm looking for a little more cooling.
I have a 460 bored .030 running 10:5:1 CR. What I've done while doing the oil change is move the inlet hose from the logs to the water pump cover, out the thermostat and into the logs, through
them and back to the snails.
Anyone see any issues with routing this way? The old manifolds and water pump cover were routed this way.
There was only one hose inlet at the water pump cover (with the other manifolds) then out the thermostat to both logs and right out the back. They had no snails.
I'd like to keep it around 165 to 180.

Hi Tom,
It just means I'm no longer using the logs as a preheater. The water is warm enough I don't need it.
Do you think it will help with the cooling to run the water into the engine FIRST and the logs LAST?

Logs first, no matter what..IMHO. The logs won't heat the water up too much unless there is a problem. There sounds to be a issue with volume, I have seen engines run at 140-150* with 90* lake water, sooooo.. :-\

I have to concurr. there is absolutely NO WAY your lake or river water in the Pittsburgh area are anywhere near how warm the lake water is here in Phoenix, and the Blue boat held 150 all day long with probably the same long bolt logs. Held a little more than that when she burned and sank, however, but........... ;D

Maybe the 1/2 inch ball valve is restricting it. That was the only change to the hoses.
I'll pull it to see.

I took the valve off today but left the hoses routed to the engine first. I'll wait to see the temp and adjust from there.
This is the way the hosing was done with the other manifolds. If these manifolds get to hot I'll switch the hoses, if the engine temp is to low I'll switch the hoses..... in other words, we'll see :sly:

We actually had a discutssion about this on Saturday on the beach. I watched the Moo pretty carefully and she held 160 at almost any given time. heated up to about 180 if I left her idle for awhile, but I honestly don't see a problem with 180-190 if you're not having detonation issues. That should be a target temp for proper engine wear on a street engine so why's a boat different?
My concern is your logs getting tore up or burned up running them that way though.

I'm taking it out today for a little run. We'll watch closely to see what happens. Like I said if the temp is lower I'll switch them back to see if the valve was the problem.
I just don't want this engine damaged before it's broken in.

Well as usual I followed your advise and switched the hosed back before I went to the lake.
As usual you guys were right ;D
Must have been the shut off valve I put on restricting the flow. It's fine now.
