Title: Crankcase ventilation through headers.
Post by: 78 PROPDUSTER on June 02, 2008, 04:48:47 PM
I have found kits but none of the valves have have threaded ends on the hose side, anyone know who sells them?

Thanks

I think moroso sells the whole kit.

summit and mr gasket both also make a kit.....but they are all for push on hose.

i did some light searching and couldnt find anything either...ill look some more.

i am interested as well because i want to replace my black rubber hose with some stainless braided stuff just to clean it up.

Not a thread jack, just a question.  Will this type of system work with wet headers or will it cause milkshake oil ?  I hate that oily film around the breathers after a hard run.

Hey ya know what I use around the breathers? Cheap, and disposable too. I snake a couple of my daughters hair scrunchies, they being elastic they hold aroung the breather neck and the material soaks up the oil. After a couple of trips throw em away, and get a couple more ;D   Mark

Ima cheap bastard. I went to Home depot, and got a piece of non galvanized pipe, ground it down to the right size. I had also just removed the AIR injection off of my 2000 Camaro, so there are your check valves. All I needed at that point were the valve cover breathers.

Unless your check-valve blows, it will only allow air out, it won't draw any in.

Looks like a puke tank should take care of it. Oh and a puke tank is not something you lean over and hurl after a long night of drinking.

Here is one I made. I welded baffles in it as well so when the oil/vapors come into the side of the tank they "hit" the wall and the oil vapor droplets fall out. My RPM's are right at 6000 RPMS and I have not had one drop of oil spray out of anywhere.

I have one more catalog to flip through after I eat dinner, but I have seen literally hundres of pictures of emissions check valves and they all have 5/8" or 3/4" hose connections (suprised me), my dad was an auto parts sore owner operator for 30+ years, if he can't figure it out, it can't be done.

If it were me I would just cut the end off them and braze a steel nipple in them and away you go.(they cost $10 so even if you jack it up it won't break you)

Better still, braze in a 1/2 inch nat. gas line adapter which is flare to pipe, and use an AN fitting (AN6 I think) to connect it. BTW the threads are the same but the angle of the flare is slightly different in degrees of angle, but its low eough pressure that a little Permatex #1 will do nicely  8)

Here is a link to the Banderlog manualhttp://www.banderlog.com/products/waterInjectionValve/waterInjectionValveManual.pdf (http://www.banderlog.com/products/waterInjectionValve/waterInjectionValveManual.pdf)

These things work pretty good, but I do not have one :'(

I have installed them on all my rich friends boats. :banghead:

Thanks for the interest, I have read that PCV valves from a Volvo were used but can't find info. on those either.  What about a compression fitting to pipe thread as an adapter?
Title: Re: Crankcase ventilation through headers.
Post by: GT Jets on June 03, 2008, 10:28:55 PM
you mean compression to the valve? maybe a little bulky but might work.

May have found a valve threaded on both sides, but need to check, I think this sucker is metric

Im running a morroso vacume pump. pricey but eliminates all blow by and inshures proper ring seal.

There literally no "double ended" gulp valves in the catalog, start brazing, if you need any info I can step by step it for you, shouldn't be too tough. 8)

x2 I'm running those k&n style breathers, man what a mess they make. I think I might try the scrunchie idea with some conventional breathers till I can do the puke tank.

this may sound like a stupid question, but couldnt you just route the breather tube back into the intake manifold like they do on a normal car setup or will it kill power?

the idea here is to use the vacuum in the headers to create a negative pressure in the crank case.

I was thinking about a kit that uses a weld on fitting thats at about a 45 degree angle on the side of the header collector and you hook the vent hose to that. That way the exhaust gasses coming by it will pull the vent gasses out, kinda like one of those crappy water pumps that you hook to your hose and the water going thru it draws water into it from the suction port.

marc, yeah, thats the kit that uses the push on hose. we were looking for one that had AN threads so we could use AN fittings with braided hose. I hate the black hose and hose clamps on mine.....everything is AN with braided lines then i got this ugly hose hangin off my headers.

I'm may be full of crap here, (would not be the first time ::)) but why couldn't you fit/braze the check valves into the breathers in the valve covers and use an adapter fitting in the pipe thread on the header tube?

I think it would work the same and look sano. ;)

I have another dumb question about this ::).  Does this type of system work only on open headers or will it work with baffles ?  I was thinking the baffles would make backpreasure and the system wont be able to draw the air out of the motor, right/wrong ?
Title: Re: Crankcase ventilation through headers.
Post by: GT Jets on June 08, 2008, 12:34:35 PM
Good question, and that's what the check valves are for. unless your baffles are extremely under-sized/restrictive it should work out fine because all exhaust collectors have a "pulse" and it has a lot to do with lobe separation (the time in degrees that the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time) the exhaust does not flow in one direction only. :)

Easy to prove, start your car/truck and get a piece of paper and hold it at the exhaust tip, it will pop back and forth, if you have a bad exhaust valve it will pull in harder than push out, sometimes even tearing the paper in half. Kind of cool if you think about it. ;)

That looks Sik! 8)

You don't have a problem with water inversion?
looks like the checks are below the water line, just curious.

Never had a problem with water inversion. There seems to be enough slope in the exaust that the check valves are just a touch above the waterline.
