So Im changing the oil on my new boat.... And geeez what a long process for an oil change.. This boat has a BBC 454 and it has original 87.5 hours on the boat... The bad part is the previous owner didn't keep up on the services... At least what I can tell from the filters. My napa golds are extremely heavy and inside them you can see a mud like sludge at the bottom of them :(... Never seen oil filters this filthy.... What's weird is the oil on the dip stick is somewhat clear/clean? .... But with the oil drained it looks like regular old used oil? I find it odd the filters being so dirty and heavy.... And pan oil ok.. All I have to say is what's in the filter is not in the pan... Which sounds like the filters were doing what they suppose to. What do you guys think.? I'm not too worried about it I thought I would just share is all.

History on the engine? How long had it been sitting? How old are the filters?

If the filter was severely plugged it might have been bypassing all together. Have you cut the filter open yet?
It might be a good idea to change the oil again after your next time out, that way you know you've got most of the junk out of the system.

If the oil had ever gotten really hot, either previous oil chance or current, you will gain some filterable sludge.
Also if the oil has ever been fuel laden or wet with water you will gain some crap in the filter...
You can have the oil analyzed, but in all honesty, why? Put new oil, new filter and get some hours on it...Save 2 oz. of the new oil you put in it and when you do the next change you can send it in and know there are no issues...
Otherwise don't make too much out of it. Sounds like the boat found a good new home to me.... :thumbup: :thumbup:

first off you guys are awesome :) thanks for the replys. the last owner told me he ran it last summer in havasu. history of the engine = just a stock marine power 454 mrkv , which model? i dont know yet, im guessing sportpac cuz it does have their dual oil filter system , dual belts, steel pan with drain hose, and their other stuff. but no repairs as of yet from break downs, it has the basset headers, which eliminator may had on when the boat was new, idk? lets hope it stays together tho for awhile at least... 454s kinda scare me with head gaskets and spun bearings, ( my dad had a night mare chev. duelly that had crazy issues)... but all big blocks are pain right. lol last oil service is unkown. oil was clear on dipstick. good idea about opening the oil filters, so i did that... pictures below. I will def. change the oil after my first time out , which is hopefully this weekend. also i do think this motor got really hot, i have notice bank 1 cylinder 1 exhaust tube extremly discolored liketell blueish green and its the only pipe thats deformed, it has a dent and looks kinda twisted... which sucks :'( ... so maybe this thing got to hot once and sitting = a little sludge substance ... so when i opened the filters it turns out they werent has bad as i thought,,, there was prob. about 1mm maybe 2mm of sludge/ silt... mostly silt.. at the bottom of the filter that i scraped off with a screw driver.... but as far as the outsides of the filter.... not bad at all. i think im just a paranoid new boat owner who is very anal lol ... sorry i type alot ... just trying to do my best to get this boat going and have some fun. I ran my Bbc at 6200 for 10 miles straight....repeatedly, and never had any bearing issues. Use good oil and clearance 'em right and no issues. I'd change the oil and filters and run
The balls out of it. If its wrong, it'll blow up......if its right, it won't. Simple as that. Stressing over it will not change the inevitable.
