460 starting issue

it still has a slow, then stop slow then stop crank all while holding in start possition???? its got a new batt like 600 cca. anyway any thoughts? i hooked it up to a running truck and spins better bud still does it??? help!!!!! it fires dont get me wrong just takes for ever with the key in start position, acts like a weak battery.
all new cables, good ground, know good starter (did the same with the old one))) please help the chick gets scared when its in the water and i crank over

Wouldn't be the first defunctive new battery I've ever seen............That's what it sounds like.

Double check the connections, the crimps on the new cables, but 'm voting crap battery.

thats what nordie thinks, same exact thing with two different starters, and a new battery, and hooked to a running truck. i think you guys are right. timing!!!!! sunday will tell

Big River last year, my battery was only about 3 months old. Jump, charger, Jumpbox, STILL would not even turn over. Brad, Alamojimmy, The Laker Boat, and Ralph were there for this. Pulled the spare battery out of my truck, ran fine all weekend. Sometimes a junk battery will act like a huge resistor.........Just a thought, and a guess, but sure sounds like it.

I would install a master switch to shut the battery off. This will stop whatever is drawing power from the battery if anything. Also check the voltage the starter draw is and the alt should be putting out 13.6 to 14.1 to keep the battery up.

It definately sounds like your timing is off. My roommates boat would do the same thing and we ended up having the distributer one tooth off.  Just food for thought...

Take off the coil wire and turn it over.  If the starter antics go away it proves
your timing is to advanced.    

If you fire to early the engine is fighting your starter.

Back off the timing a bit then try it again.   Turn the distributor CCW about 1/2 inch and see
if that doesn't change it's attitude a bit.   ;D

Also,
check the relay for heat and the cables leading to it about 10 inches in either direction from it to see if they are over heating.

600 amp Battery is marginal for a 460, 750 or better. Sounds like there other issues also however to have the right battery helps to move gorward. To test properly you need a load tester not a surface tester .
Also be sure you have the right cable and not 6 volt cable, also distance is critical causes voltage drop.

If that worked check the timing total should be 35 degrees, you must be way over that , good way to burn it up. Not knowing what you dist is at, check what it's idling at, maybe advance is stuck or broken springs etc. So lets say inital is 15 and dist spread is 20 deg the total in at 25-3000 rpm would be 35   15 +20 = 35.
